American Horror Stories’ two-part premiere, “Rubber Wo(man),” travels to a familiar location known as the Murder House, but does Evan Peters’ Tate Langdon appear? The Los Angeles mansion dubbed Murder House due to the sinister activity surrounding the property was the setting of American Horror Story season 1. Peters was one of the core cast members in the anthology’s debut season, portraying a teenage ghost trapped within the home’s walls. Though the actor returned for various roles in the seasons that followed, there was hope he would cameo in the spinoff once it was announced the Murder House would make a grand return, especially after reprising the role as Tate in season 8’s Apocalypse.
American Horror Stories’ “Rubber Wo(man)” is primarily set within Murder House, but the two episodes focus on a new set of characters. Matt Bomer and Gavin Creel star as Michael and Troy Winslow, a married couple who purchase the haunted house with the intent of flipping it for profit. The pair moves into the house along with their teenage daughter, Scarlett (Sierra McCormick), who finds the infamous Rubber Man suit shortly after arriving. Following some reluctance, Scarlett soon embraces the Rubber Woman persona, feeding into her already existing psychopathic tendencies and the lingering spirits’ increasing influences.
Though Peters has been confirmed to appear in American Horror Story: Double Feature, it was unclear if he was also tapped to appear in the spinoff. Granted, a handful of AHS vets are set to star in the spinoff, so the notion wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. An actor wearing Tate’s signature green-striped sweater was even seen on the set of the AHS franchise, but there was confusion whether the sequence was for the primary show or spinoff. Despite the mysteries, longtime fans hoped Tate and fellow season 1 characters would appear in American Horror Stories. While no major characters are shown directly, Tate is present in a “Rubber Wo(man)” sequence.
As pointed out by a viewer (via Reddit), Tate can be seen in a scene in “Rubber Wo(man) Part 1.” The Redditor shares that at the 14:06 minute mark, “Tate’s figure stands before us in his classic green striped sweater towards the left of the screen, looming in the background as Scarlett pleasures herself.” It’s a detail even many eagle-eyed viewers missed, considering the figure is blurred as the focus remains on Scarlett. However, it confirms Tate’s spirit is still lurking around, despite not making his actual presence known. This also likely suggests it’s Tate who returns the Rubber Man suit to Scarlett, urging the new Murder House occupant to take over the sadistic role.
Even though Tate does technically appear in American Horror Stories, it’s not the form many fans would’ve liked. The set photos did show someone wearing the green-striped sweater, but it wasn’t Peters reprising the role like many predicted. Though some familiar faces and Easter eggs might appear now and then, blending existing elements with a fresh perspective, it looks like they won’t be relying on major characters from previous installments.
Just because Peters doesn’t have a direct cameo as Tate in American Horror Stories, the opportunity for the actor to serve as another character is not lost. There could also be a chance Tate returns in American Horror Story season 10 or beyond, considering the Murder House is a significant setting in the fictional universe. That said, perhaps it’s time for the series to move on from certain characters to give recurring actors brand new roles to explore.
