American Horror Story: Coven features a coven of witches who have lots of different supernatural powers, but Zoe’s “Black Widow” ability causes some major confusion.

Ryan Murphy’s growing library of series have all made their marks on the small screen, but it’s American Horror Story that’s been running the longest, and brought Murphy together with many of his major players. American Horror Story has been able to tackle many of the staples of the horror genre over the years, and it’s impressive to see how much each season manages to fit in and the obscure horror references that are hidden within each unique outing.

The versatility of American Horror Story means that many people have a different choice for their top season, but Coven remains a particularly popular year among both audiences and also the cast themselves. AHS: Coven features a power struggle and changing of the guard within a powerful coven of witches once new budding magic users discover their latent abilities. Coven devotes a lot of attention to the many unique powers that these witches possess, but Taissa Farmiga’s Zoe Benson has one unnerving ability that raises a lot of questions.

Zoe first learns about her “Black Widow” power in American Horror Story, season 3, episode 1, “Bitchcraft,” when she has sex with her boyfriend, Charlie. It results in a traumatic experience where her romantic partner suffers from a brain aneurysm and subsequently dies, but it also doubles as the moment that Zoe learns that she’s more than normal. Her skill—which gets its chic name courtesy of Madison Montgomery (Emma Roberts)—causes anyone who engages in intercourse with Zoe to suffer from massive hemorrhages that are typically fatal in nature. This tragic ability turns Zoe into quite the subject of controversy among the other witches from Coven, which makes her success in the group sting even more to some of them. Zoe’s Black Widow power doesn’t frequently come up, but she does later find a way to it embrace it when she weaponizes her ability to take out Archie in an attempt to karmically balance the scales.

This power is primarily used to Zoe’s disadvantage, but it’s also so problematic in nature that it feels like Coven wants the audience to forget about it. For instance, she has sex with Evan Peters’ Kyle Spencer (and technically Madison), but he doesn’t receive the same grim fate. This is due to how Kyle’s deceased, but resurrected status means he won’t be afflicted by the brain hemorrhage in the same way. Oddly, this makes him the perfect partner for Zoe. There’s also the issue of how Zoe is told her great-grandmother was also a witch who carried this same power. While powers are often inherited, this raises the question of how she could successfully give birth. It’s possible that, in her grandmother’s case, the hemorrhages weren’t fatal, or maybe she could control her ability long enough to at least finish the deed before her partner’s death. It still seems unlikely, but weirder things have certainly happened in American Horror Story. The fact there’s some way – potentially – for a partner to survive at least gives some hope to Zoe being able to have a child down the line, if she wishes.
