The Amiga 500 will be the next console to get the mini treatment and it’ll be here in early 2022 if all goes to plan.

Classic games getting the remake or remaster treatment right now is big business. EA revealed last week that Mass Effect Legendary Edition continues to perform well beyond what it ever imagined, and it hasn’t even been all that long since the games were first released. At least not when you compare it to something like the Amiga 500.

That’s right, it isn’t only games that are getting remade in 2021. Retro Games and Koch Media have announced the A500 Mini, a miniature version of the classic Amiga 500 from the 1980s, will go on sale at the beginning of 2022 barring any unforeseen reasons to delay its launch. The console will come with a mouse and a gamepad, but will also include a USB port for your own keyboard.

As has been the case with past mini consoles, including Retro Games’ own C64 Mini, the A500 Mini will have plenty of classic games built-in. 25 of them, in fact, including Worms, The Chaos Engine, and Simon The Sorceror. You will also be able to side load your own games via a USB stick.

Retro Games and Koch aren’t the only developers to have capitalized on the want to play old games by recreating miniature versions of iconic consoles. Nintendo has released what it calls Classic Editions of both the NES and the SNES, the first of which sold far better than Nintendo initially anticipated. Sega launched a mini Mega Drive, while PlayStation sold a shrunk down version of the PS1 as to not miss out on the hype.

The A500 Mini doesn’t have a firm launch date but will be here by early 2022 and retail at $139.99. It will also add a save and resume feature to its games, something we very much take for granted in the modern-day. Gone are the days of having to start over once you run out of lives, and this time around, you’ll be able to save at a point right before a notoriously tricky level or boss so you can return to it as many times as you like without having to start over.
