The online social deduction multiplayer title Among Us is a relatively simple game, but it’s recent success has already brought about some interesting and complex fan theories to give more backstory to the space-themed setting. One theory gives a plausible explanation for how the Impostors came to be, incorporating each of the maps for more evidence.

There are currently three maps in Among Us: The Skeld, MIRA HQ, and the latest addition, Polus. The developers are in the process of adding a new map, so this theory will only pertain to the ones already available. The Skeld is the primary map that takes place on a cargo spaceship which travels to the other locations. MIRA HQ is a tall building set high in a planet’s atmosphere and is the location the Crewmates travel back to after a long journey on The Skeld. The Polus Outpost is a base located on the far-off planet of Polus.

This fan theory dives into the lore behind Among Us, explaining how the Impostor attacks originated throughout the different maps. YouTuber KEVTHEKING99-YT points out details in different rooms of some maps and how certain areas and actions led to the rise of the Impostors within the Crewmates’ community. Additionally, it offers explanations for why the Among Us Crewmates look they way they do and sheds a different light on the Impostors outside of the murderous connotation associated with them.

Among Us: Hidden Lore & Imposter Origin Theory

KEVTHEKING99-YT first explains why the Crewmates are all about 3’6″ and weigh around 92lbs. They are likely humans who’ve evolved into a shorter stature due to not needing a big physical body in space – similar to how many aliens are depicted as little green men. Their vending machines contain food products similar to real life vending machines, and the photos they carry in their wallets show an entire family with everyone wearing Among Us hazmat suits. He suggests there are a bunch of different crews, all composed of scientists who work at MIRA HQ, a company of researchers and explorers. KEVTHEKING99-YT calls the planet that MIRA HQ is located on “planet MIRA,” although the Among Us Wiki page states that MIRA HQ is likely in the Earth’s atmosphere. Either way, it’s safe to assume that planet is no longer habitable due to MIRA HQ having a greenhouse up in the clouds and its planet looking like a ball of smog when viewed from the telescope on Polus. Because of the pollution or even a deadly virus, they must all wear the suits and live above the planet.

Since Polus looks like a barren wasteland, the Among Us fan theory explains there may have been a rare mineral or power source located there that is needed to sustain MIRA HQ, explaining why there’s an outpost on Polus that MIRA Crewmates travel to. In the Specimen Room on Polus, test tubes with samples can been seen, likely found when mining the power source. Additionally, broken glass is on the Laboratory floor. Perhaps a test tube broke, releasing the specimen inside. This could have released the potential deadly virus or even parasites that take over the Crewmate host, thus becoming an Imposter.

KEVTHEKING99-YT further hypothesizes that the specimens in Among Us could be shapeshifters who use advanced mimicking to eliminate any threats in order to survive, which makes them seem less devious and also explains how Impostors infiltrated the maps. Either these parasite/shapeshifter Impostors are discovered on Polus, where they’re immediately thrown in the lava, or on The Skeld heading back to MIRA HQ, where they’re thrown into space. Among Us Impostor specimens could have also ended up in the one the research boxes only to be opened at MIRA HQ and discovered there, where they’re thrown into the sky to fall to the polluted planet below.

Although this theory is likely looking further into the history and lore than what was intended for Among Us, it does a nice job of tying all the maps together and offering a good explanation for the game’s setting. Until InnerSloth gives any concrete details of the Crewmate and Impostor origins, fans can have fun coming up with their own theories and speculations for now.
