Excitement is building for the imminent release of Pokemon Let’s Go, but that doesn’t mean we haven’t stopped thinking about what’s next for the franchise.

It has been 20 years since we were first introduced to the Kanto region via Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. Like us, that probably makes a lot of you feel pretty old. Come November 16, 2018, Nintendo Switch owners will be able to experience Kanto like never before via Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee.

The game is effectively a remake of Pokemon Yellow, the game that came next after Red and Blue, except with 2018 graphics. It will also only feature the original 151 Pokemon that were available on that first iteration of games and you can even link it with your Pokemon Go account. However, even though we haven’t even played Let’s Go yet, eager fans are already asking what’s next.

What fans really want to know is when we will get our first open world Pokemon game. Franchises such as Zelda and Super Mario have already done so on the Switch, so the precedent is there. EuroGamer recently caught up with the main developer on Let’s Go, Junichi Masuda and pressed him for some answers on what we might see next from the ever-expanding Pokemon universe.

Masuda questioned whether fans really want that saying “it’s a different matter whether players will actually enjoy that kind of playstyle.” He did add that he and other developers are constantly trying to come up with ways to keep advancing Pokemon games. “Things like setting up an AI so that you know real world Pokémon appear, or different ways to appreciate the game,” he went on to say.

Clearly, big things are coming for Pokemon and its fans. It has already been revealed that a new Pokemon RPG will be coming in 2019. However, when asked for more information on that, Masuda would not give anything away. For now, we just need to enjoy Let’s Go when it is finally released on November 16. That will likely keep Pokemon fans entertained for a few months at least so developers can focus on their next projects in peace.

Josh has been gaming for as long as he can remember. That love began with a mild childhood addiction to the Sega Genesis, or Mega Drive since he lives in the UK. Back then, Sonic 2 quickly became his favorite game and as you might have guessed from his picture, the franchise has remained close to his heart ever since. Nowadays, he splits his time between his PS4 and his Switch and spends far too much time playing Fortnite.
