The Analogue Pocket, the new retro handheld console, completely sold out of its pre-order units less than fifteen minutes after becoming available. The great-looking console has garnered considerable attention recently with its sleek design and the ability to play original cartridges for the Game Boy, Game Color, Game Boy Advance, as well as Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket, and Atari Lynx games with the use of an adapter.

After the pre-orders were all sold, Analogue tweeted that they would do their best to provide additional units for sale, but as with most industries in the midst of a global pandemic, supply will likely remain far below consumer demand.

Not surprisingly, a quick look online reveals that resellers were hard at work alongside other buyers, with eBay listings of around $400-500 for each console, or even more, a massive spike from the $199 price on the official website.

Although the Analogue Pocket looks fantastic, both in its aesthetic and what it can offer users, it is a tad surprising to see such demand for this console. At its core, the Analogue Pocket only plays games from systems that are twenty to thirty years old. Having released in 1989, one would assume that the market for consumers itching to re-experience their old Game Boy games would not be so large, but it seems that this is the case.

With the odds of acquiring an Analogue Pocket at a reasonable price quite low, based on how quickly pre-orders sold out, another option may be to purchase one of the many retro-style emulators that can be found online. TheGamer recently reviewed the BittBoy PocketGo, and the RetroStone 2 is currently being examined as well.

Both offer excellent options for emulation when it is not possible to access older hardware and is one alternative to not being able to play one’s older game cartridges. Normally, such a recommendation comes with the caveat that emulation should only be done by owners of the original game, but since a hopeful buyer of the Analogue Pocket must have their own original games, this should be a non-issue.

In any case, the best bet for hopefully buyers of an Analogue Pocket should check Twitter often, since that is where the original announcement was made for the pre-order sale and is likely where news of additional hardware availability would be listed in the future.
