A spring update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons will bring new furniture, animals, and features to players’ islands. Nintendo’s charming life simulator has received a variety of updates over the past year, with many of them introducing new items based on seasonal events. Many of these seasonal events were intentionally gated behind timed updates in order to prevent players from jumping ahead in time and spoiling surprises for other players. As the game has been out for a year, Nintendo has covered almost all of the real-life holidays that appear in other games.

To continue the steady flow of new content, Nintendo has instead turned to celebrate other events. February’s update included Mario-themed items in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. Players are able to dress up as Mario, Luigi, and the rest of the cast as well as decorate their islands with items that look like they’re straight out of a Super Mario Bros. level. Fans’ favorite part of the update was the new Warp Pipe item, which enabled teleportation between two points on a player’s island. The variety of ways that Animal Crossing: New Horizons players have used Warp Pipes in their creations is a testament to the community’s creativity.

Following the popularity of the Super Mario Bros. update, Nintendo has now revealed the game’s next update. On March 18th, players will be able to download the next free update. Highlights include a brand-new item called the 1st Anniversary Cake, which is a cake decorated to look like an island, complete with fruit trees and bushes. The update will also contain new seasonal items, including a whoopee cushion in celebration of April Fool’s Day and a variety of prom-themed decorations and wearable items. Also included is compatibility with the Animal Crossing Sanrio Collaboration Pack, which can be purchased at Target stores for $5.99. This special amiibo card pack allows players to invite six Sanrio-themed characters to their island and grants access to additional Sanrio furniture and clothing items.

Upgrades are also coming for the game’s design editor. Players can now unlock the Custom Design Pro Editor + app on their in-game Nook Phone, which allows the customization of new types of items, including umbrellas, small flags, uchiwa, and photo stands. Players will also receive 50 additional design slots for both normal custom designs and pro custom designs, allowing them to save more custom designs. Accessing other players’ designs has also gotten easier – the custom design portal found in the Able Sisters’ shop will now be accessible anywhere thanks to another new Nook Phone app.

It’s smart of Nintendo to add extra design slots and make the custom design portal more accessible. Making and sharing custom designs has been one of the game’s most popular features since its release, and players have long been clamoring for extra spaces in which to store the designs they’ve found. Allowing players to customize new items like umbrellas and uchiwa will ultimately extend the game’s life in the eyes of players by giving them more items to make and seek designs for.

It’s also fun to see Nintendo come up with interesting seasonal item ideas now that it has exhausted most of the major holidays, and high school students who can’t attend prom thanks to the pandemic will surely appreciate this in-game tribute. This new update is proof of Nintendo’s continued support for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and its fans.
