Each new month, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players can expect to see new fish, deep-sea creatures, and bugs on and around their islands. Because the game came out in March, soon both hemispheres will have experienced the entire rotation of creatures and should be able to complete their Museum collections. Players can catch bugs year-round, though the number of critters varies based on the season. January is a good month for bugs in the Southern hemisphere, as the summer beetles are set to arrive January 1. In the Northern hemisphere, where winter is officially in full swing, players will not see any new bugs.

There are 80 bugs total in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In January, 61 of those can be caught in the Southern hemisphere, and 20 can be caught in the Northern hemisphere. There are 21 new bugs crawling to Southern hemisphere islands this month, mostly in the beetle or cicada family in time for the summer. Players in the Southern hemisphere can earn some extra bells for the start of the New Year by selling duplicates of these beetles and cicadas once they complete the Bug Gallery at the Museum. Here are all 21 new bugs heading to the Southern hemisphere in July in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and when and how players can find them.

As is typical, players will need to make sure they have a good net, either purchased or crafted. Players will need to be sure to approach bugs slowly to prevent the particularly skittish ones from flying away. Many of the beetles are the most valuable bugs available in Animal Crossing, and they tend to be rare and skittish.

Once players have donated their first catch of a new bug to Blathers at the museum, they can sell the duplicates. Bugs can be sold to Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny, but they can also be sold to Flick any time he appears on the island. He will always pay 30% more per bug than the price players would get at Nook’s Cranny. Players in the Southern hemisphere can also see him to participate in the Bug Off tournament set for January 16.
