The reign of Tom Nook is nigh, as the updated sales figures for Animal Crossing: New Horizons have revealed that the game has sold a staggering 13.41 million units since launch, though the game still hasn’t broken the top five best-selling Nintendo Switch games.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons was easily the most highly-anticipated Nintendo Switch game of 2020, but no one could have predicted its level of mainstream penetration. The self-isolation period has led to people having a lot of free time on their hands and Animal Crossing: New Horizons released at the perfect time to capitalize on this. The game has become a darling on social media, to the point where custom designs and turnip sales have dominated non-COVID discussion on Twitter.

Nintendo has released its latest earnings report, which lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons as selling 11.71 million units at the end of March. Nintendo released updated financial figures, which lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ latest sales figures as 13.41 million units.

These are amazing figures for a game that was only released at the end of March, but Animal Crossing: New Horizons hasn’t managed to crack the top five best-selling Switch games list. The updated figure means that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has outsold the Pokémon Let’s Go games, but that still only puts it at sixth place. As of the time of writing, Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold 17.37 million copies, Super Mario Odyssey has sold 17.41 million copies, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has sold 17.41 million copies, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 18.84 million copies, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sits at the head of the pack, with 24.77 million units sold.

Nintendo’s next financial report is going to be very interesting. It seems unlikely that anything is going to top Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at this rate, but the fight for the other positions is heating up. Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey seem primed to steal Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s position, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Pokémon Sword & Shield not far behind. It’s all to play for in 2020 and it feels as if Isabelle and Tom Nook have what it takes to beat the other iconic Nintendo franchises.
