Animal Crossing: New Horizons gives players numerous ways to whittle away the hours, but one of the most popular is fishing. It’s easy, it’s fun, and you never know what is on the other end of your line. However, if you want to make your fishing adventures more efficient, you’ll have to learn how to use fish bait.

Before you can use fish bait you’ll have to find a way to get your hands on some. Doing so is a simple process. First, head to your local beach and slowly walk along the shoreline. Keep your eyes on the sand and you should periodically see water spray out from beneath the surface. A tiny, circular watermark will be left behind in its wake, slowly fading away until it’s no longer visible. This marks the spot of the ever-so-useful Manila Clam.

Dig up the clam with a shovel — if this is your first time finding one then your villager will say that they could probably use it for a new DIY recipe. Head to the nearest workbench and you’ll see Fish Bait is now available, crafted from a single Manila Clam.

Once you’ve crafted the Fish Bait, head to your favorite fishing spot. Then, pull up your inventory, select Fish Bait, and scatter it on the water. This will cause a random fish to appear in front of you. Now, you can go about fishing as usual.

To use Fish Bait in the most efficient way possible, you’ll want to stack up on a full inventory before heading out. This will let you stand in one spot and bring the fish to you — drastically cutting down on the time it takes to locate a new shadow lurking in the water.

If you want to make your operation even more profitable, place a workbench near the beach. This way you can collect Manila Clams, craft them into Fish Bait, and catch fish without having to walk far at all. It’s even better if all of this is located next to Resident Services or the Museum, allowing you to sell/donate your catches without having to run clear across the island.

Stocking up on Fish Bait is an easy process. Plus, it ties into plenty of Nook Mileage challenges so you can double dip on catching fish and earning miles.
