Nook Miles is a new currency system introduced in Animal Crossing New Horizons, where players are rewarded for completing certain tasks throughout there days on the island. Players will collect Nook Miles for activities like catching a certain amount of bugs or speaking with a certain amount of neighbors a day. Completing the first loan is a simple task, but if the player wishes to expand their living spaces from a dingy tent to a multi-story home, there is a process. This guide will help players understand what it takes to reach each level of house upgrading in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Animal Crossing New Horizons places the player in humble beginnings. Starting out with a tiny tent, a lantern, and a small radio, the player must complete a variety of tasks around the islands to build up enough Bells or Nook Miles. It starts out with players picking weeds, shaking trees for fruit, and crafting flimsy tools to help explore the island better. After completing the first loan of 5000 Nook Miles, the player is given the option to further expand their tent into a small home. Now within this small home, the player is given a bit more space and a storage unit to keep their items safe. The player will also stumble across unique furniture items that will tickle their fancy as players may want to include them in their home. While building a bigger game is not required for reaching the games end credit sequence, completionist must be willing to spend millions of Bells for the final upgrade. This guide will help players breakdown what is included in each step of the housing upgrades.

Housing Upgrades in Animal Crossing New Horizons

From a tiny tent to a multi-story mansion, here is every housing upgrade and what’s included in Animal Crossing New Horizons.

• Tent: This is the first “home” the player is given at the start of the game. This will cost 5,000 Nook Miles to pay for.
• The First Home: This location is unlocked after completing the 5,000 Nook Miles task loan. It comes along with a six-by-six floor plan and includes 80 slots for storage. This is the first home upgrade in the game and can be done within the first few days of playing.
• The Second Home Upgrade: This one is given to the player after paying off the 98,000 Bell loan for the First Home. This makes the floor a bit bigger, bringing it to an eight-by-eight system and brings the total amount of storage from 80 slots to 120 slots. This may take a few days to complete, but selling bugs and fish is the most effective way of paying this off early on.
• Back Room Upgrade: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 198,000 Bell loan for the Second Home upgrade. This is the first housing upgrade that will bring an additional room to the house. The dimensions of this extra room are six-by-six and provide the player with more storage space, bringing it to a total of 240. Players will now need to get more crafty with all this extra space.
• Left Room Upgrade: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 348,000 Bell loan for the Back Room upgrade. This adds an additional six-by-six room to the left side of the house and brings the total storage to 360 items. Also, players can now move their mailboxes around on their property.
• Right Room Upgrade: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 548,000 Bell loan for the Left Room upgrade. This adds an additional six-by-six room to the right side of the house and brings the total storage to 400 items. Also, players can now customize their front doors.
• Second Floor Upgrade: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 758,000 Bell Loan for the Right Room upgrade. This adds a ten-by-ten second-floor room to customize. It also includes a storage upgrade, which brings the total to 800 items. Players can now also begin to customize the siding of their homes.
• Basement Upgrade: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 1,248,000 Bell Loan for the Second Floor upgrade. This adds an additional ten-by-ten basement floor. This also brings the total amount of storage items to 1600 slots.
• Free Exterior Upgrades: This home upgrade becomes available after paying off the 2,498,000 Bell Loan for the Basement upgrade. Players can now change the exterior of their homes once a day for free. This is the hardest to achieve since obtaining that amount of Bells may take players weeks to collect.

While paying off Tom Nook’s debt is important, it is not required in 0rder to reach the games “ending”. Animal Crossing New Horizons is a game that can go on forever, but the game does have an end credits scene where KK Slider sings to the entire town.
