One of the most valuable bugs in the game is finally available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Players who haven’t succumbed to the lure of time-traveling can now encounter the beautiful and valuable golden stag. They won’t stick around for long, though — here’s how to catch one before they fly off to their next destination.

Golden Stag Availability

Anyone searching for the golden stag doesn’t have much time to do so. They’re only available during the months of July and August for Northern Hemisphere players or January and February for those in the Southern Hemisphere. Making things more difficult is the fact that you can only stumble upon them at night — golden stags are only active between the hours of 5pm and 8am.

Thankfully, there’s only one place these beetles call home, and that’s on the trunk of coconut trees. Don’t confuse this to mean tree stumps — golden stags will only be found clinging on the side of full-grown coconut trees and will not appear on coconut trees that have been cut down.

Golden stags get scared off easily, so approach them slowly with your net raised. Then, as soon as you are within striking distance, bring down your net — get too close before swinging and they’ll fly away. Golden stags a fairly rare spawn, so you might have to check a few dozen before coming across one, but it’s certainly worth all the trouble.

A Valuable Catch

The golden stag is one of three bugs worth an incredible 12,000 bells. Only the giraffe stag and horned hercules are worth as much. Of course, that price tag means it’s a very rare species. So long as you’re scouring the coconut trees on your island during the proper time of day, you’ll find one in no time. If you don’t mind waiting for Flick to visit, that golden stag will be worth even more money. As usual, your first catch should be donated to Blathers — although that might difficult, considering how rich you’d become if you sold it instead!

Golden stag hunting is all about patience. Keep your eyes glued to coconut trees and approach slowly when you find one.
