July sees the introduction of several beetles to the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Most of these bugs are rare species that sell for thousands of bells, and the horned atlas is no different. However, it has very specific spawning requirements — here’s how you can find the beautiful bug.

Check Coconut Trees Late At Night

Make sure you bring a cup of coffee with you, as the horned atlas is only available between the hours of 5pm and 8am. You’ll also want to make sure you’re hunting during the months of July or August in the Northern Hemisphere and January or February in the Southern Hemisphere.

Not only will you need to be hunting at the right time, but you’ll also need to be looking in the right place. The horned atlas only spawns on coconut trees, meaning you’ll need to scour the coastal portion of your island. It’s a rare species, but some folks report a better likelihood of coming across the horned atlas during rainstorms.

If you are really having trouble finding one, try going to a mystery island and removing all the objects — flowers, rocks, and fruit trees — but leaving the coconut trees intact. It’s not a foolproof method, but it will cut down on the roster of bugs that are able to spawn and increase your odds of finding a horned atlas beetle.

Sell, Sell, Sell!

This powerful looking bug bags quite the payday, netting 8000 bells when sold to Timmy and Tommy. Of course, you’ll want to donate your first catch to Blathers, but after that it can be a great way to pad your bank account. Better yet, wait for Flick to visit your island for an increased rate.

Remember, don’t go out until at least 5pm, then look exclusively at coconut trees. Be careful not to sprint, though — this beetle gets scared easily. Several other insects can be found on these trees during the summer months and most of them are even more valuable than the horned atlas. That makes coconut trees a prime location this time of year, so grab your net and head to the beach!
