Sometimes the arrival of a new catchable creature in Animal Crossing: New Horizons feels like a big deal. On June 1st, for example, sharks began spawning in the oceans surrounding islands across the Northern Hemisphere, introducing an entirely new type of finned fish shadow to non-time travelling players. Fireflies too now light up the night sky, altering the visual landscape in a similar manner to the cherry blossom trees that bloomed at the beginning of April. Other times, however, new additions are simply minor changes to the game world, unnoticeable to those not paying attention. The mosquito is much more so the latter than the former.

How to Catch a Mosquito

Mosquitoes became available in Northern Hemisphere players’ villages on June 1st, and will remain until the end of September. Players in the Southern Hemisphere may have already encountered one, as they spawn there from December to March. They can be found from 5 p.m. to 4 a.m. so plan an evening play session if that’s not already a part of your routine in order to catch one.

Relative to nearly every other insect in the game, mosquitoes are small. Other similarly tiny insects like the ant and the flea can be obtained under special circumstances in which additional visual cues indicate their presence. The mosquito, however, flies freely like any other winged insect. The telltale sign of a mosquito in your presence is a buzzing sound.

The most notable way in which mosquitoes are unique is that, similar to wasps, tarantulas and scorpions, they can attack. Unlike with these other insects, a mosquito’s sting causes no effect to your player character. The accompanying animation and text box can, however, interrupt activities like fishing.

What To Do With Mosquitoes

Upon catching your first mosquito and donating it to the museum, Blathers will explain to your player character on how and why they suck animals’ blood. Timmy and Tommy at Nook’s Cranny will only pay 130 Bells per mosquito, so beyond obtaining a specimen for the museum, catching mosquitoes becomes more valuable for preventing their invasive bites than for amassing any meaningful amount of Bells.
