The world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a bit bigger than before, as Nintendo has introduced a brand-new mechanic to the game in the form of deep-sea diving. Players can now hop into the waters surrounding their island and search for dozens of new creatures. Many of these are easy to catch — simply dive underwater and swim towards their shadow. However, some sea dwellers — including the gigas giant clam — are too fast for this. Here’s how to properly catch the fastest sea creatures in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

The Basics Of Swimming & Diving

Before you head out to hunt these tricky animals, it’s important to understand the basic swimming and diving mechanics. Getting in the water is simple enough — just press the A button while at the water’s edge and wearing a wetsuit. Once in the water there are two different swimming speeds. Tapping the A button while in the water will make you swim quickly, whereas moving the analog stick without any other input lets you swim slowly. This will be your key to catching fast sea creatures.

When you’re ready to dive, press the Y button to shoot down to the ocean floor. It’s here that you’ll find all the sea creatures in the game.

Spotting Sea Creatures

New Horizons makes it easy to find sea creatures in your vicinity. While above water, just look for bubbles floating to the surface. These indicate that there is something of value directly below. When underwater, look for circular shadows, indicating the exact location of your target.

Move Slowly To Catch Sea Creatures

For speedy sea creatures, locating this stream of bubbles is important. But don’t move to fast! Speedy creatures will move away from you if approached to quickly. Instead, simply move the analog stick without tapping the A button to slowly approach the bubbles. Continue to do this under you are directly over the bubble stream.

Once you are positioned directly above the bubbles, now you’re free to dive underwater. If done properly you should automatically grab your prey — if not, you should be able to close the gap underwater before your target starts to flee. It might take a few tries to get it right, but it doesn’t take long to get the hang of the new mechanic.

Jamming On The Buttons

While the above technique of sneaking up on your prey is the most efficient way to catch speedy sea creatures, you do have another option. It doesn’t work all the time, but it is possible to chase your target into a corner and catch them once they have no where else to go. This strategy is less than ideal, but if you don’t feel like being sneaky it’s a valid option.

There’s no set formula for pulling this off properly, but the idea is to approach the sea creature in a way that will force them to move towards the outer boundaries of the sea. Here, they’ll encounter a rocky barricade. Certain sections of the barricade have small gaps that only have one way in or out — if you can guide a sea creature towards these areas, they have no where to go but into your arms.
