The coelacanth is an extremely rare fish, both in real-life and in the world of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In fact, it’s so rare that people thought that the coelacanth went extinct around 66 million years ago. It was only recently rediscovered off the coast of South Africa in 1938 (which is recent from a geological standpoint), and it remains critically endangered to this very day.
Coelacanths are said to be “living fossils” since they’re the only remaining member of their taxon. They have no living relatives, and the only fish that even remotely resemble the coelacanth is in fossil remains deep in the bedrock. So yeah, these fish are old.

Coelacanths have a higher chance of spawning when it’s either raining or snowing, so try fishing during heavy weather.
Finally, coelacanths have a higher chance of spawning around mysterious islands that you arrive at when going on a random tour with Dodo Airlines. You need to purchase a Nook Miles Ticket in order to travel to these islands, which provide the player with a generally increased chance of encountering rare spawns.
Sadly, coelacanth spawns are entirely random, so even following these guidelines to the letter may not result in a coelacanth. You’ll just need to keep fishing and hope to get lucky.
