As time marches on, Animal Crossing: New Horizons continues to cycle through its catalog of seasonal insects and fish. Starting in July, Northern Hemisphere players have access to dozens of new creatures including the massive Ocean Sunfish. Here’s everything you need to know about catching the elusive fish in New Horizons.

Bring Your Fish Bait

Before heading out on your fishing excursion, be sure to stock up on Fish Bait. This useful item can be crafted from Manila Clams and will allow you to quickly spawn fish without having to run around your island. Once you’ve crafted a pocketful of bait, grab your trusty fishing rod and head to the ocean.

Size, Location, & Rarity

The Ocean Sunfish can be found swimming in the ocean between the hours of 4am and 9pm during the months of July, August, and September. That’s a wide window of opportunity — but don’t be fooled! This fish is a pretty uncommon species. To maximize your chances of stumbling upon the big guy it’s best to go fishing during a rainstorm, as the Ocean Sunfish is known to be much more active during these showers.

Thankfully, if an Ocean Sunfish is in your vicinity it’s hard to miss. Not only does it have a large shadow, but it also has a fin protruding from the surface of the water. Toss your line in its direction and with any luck you’ll reel in this monstrosity.

Market Value Or Museum Donation?

As usual, it’s best to donate your first catch to Blathers and the local Museum. The Ocean Sunfish sells for 4,000 bells, yet that seems like a low asking price for such an elusive target. If you don’t need the money right away it’s worth waiting for CJ to visit your island to boost your earning potential.

All told, catching the Ocean Sunfish comes down to patience. You can speed up the process by bringing Fish Bait, but so long as you’re fishing in the ocean between the months of July and September you’ll eventually encounter the valuable creature.
