The version 1.4.0 update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons brings some much requested additions to the game. As the second wave of Summer Update content, this update sees the return of dreaming, a long requested feature for this latest entry in the series.

Dreaming was first introduced in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, though it worked a little differently there. You needed to create the Dream Suite, a unique building that, as the name suggests, allowed you to dream. Dreaming let you visit snapshots of other people’s towns without needing them to be online.

The Basics of Dreaming

Dreaming in New Horizons is a much simpler process with fewer unlock requirements. The only two things that are needed are your house and a bed. So, as long as you’ve been playing for a little bit and have upgraded from the starting tent, you’re already good to go.

To actually enter the dream, it’s as simple as lying on your bed. By selecting “Yeah, I want to sleep…” once prompted, you’ll be able to visit the dream world. Luna, a familiar face from New Leaf’s Dream Suite, will appear to offer her services once again. By talking to her, it’s possible to visit dream islands, versions of other islands that cannot be changed by visitors.

Dream islands use Dream Addresses, a code that is generated once you upload your dream online. By using a Dream Address given to you by another player, it’s possible to visit the dream island that they have uploaded. It’s worth mentioning that, despite not needing the other player to be online when visiting their dream island, a Nintendo Switch Online membership is still required.

Differences Between Regular and Dream Islands

The key difference is that, unlike visiting a regular island, it’s not possible to make permanent changes to a dream island. This means that you cannot take any items back with you once the dream is over, and anything you do will be reset as well. Because of this, there are very few downsides to sharing your dream island with others, as there’s no way for them to ruin it.

Furthermore, any changes made to the real version of an island will also not affect its dream counterpart, as long as the owner does not update it. It can be a cool way to visit an early version of someone’s island, especially if they’ve drastically reworked it after uploading their dream.
