The Able Sisters are a trio of hedgehogs that work within the fashion industry in the Animal Crossing universe. The eldest and youngest siblings Sable and Mabel run a tailor’s shop aptly titled Able Sisters. The middle sibling Label (formerly Labelle) is an aspiring fashion designer who works independently from her sisters (except in New Leaf).
So it shouldn’t surprise long-time players that Label is absent when Sable and Mabel open their shop on the player’s island in New Horizons. If the player engages with Sabel consistently, she’ll eventually delve into the details of the sisters’ past and will mention that Label went off on her own to pursue her dream of being a fashion designer. On a surface level, it’s seemingly obvious that Sable is happy for her younger sister – or at the very least at peace with her decision. She doesn’t speak poorly of Label and mentions her as merely a topic of conversation for her and the player to discuss.
After the Able Sisters open their shop, Label will begin to appear in the Resident Services plaza and will ask the player to model a themed outfit for her in exchange for Tailors Tickets. After the player has done this, Label doesn’t mention her sisters, and if the player goes to the Able Sisters store, Sable and Mabel will engage with the player as they normally do.
This raises the question: is there tension between the Able Sisters? Canonically, yes. In Sable and Label’s dialogue in City Folk and New Leaf respectively, the player can learn about the death of the siblings’ parents which forced Sable to raise a young Mabel and mature quickly. When Label got into an argument with Sable one day, she left her two sisters and moved to the city to become a fashion designer. The remaining Able Sisters eventually grew up and would run the Able Sisters shop together.
So is Sable still hurt about Label leaving her and baby Mabel to fend for themselves? Do they know about their sister’s presence on the player’s island and simply ignore her? They’re on the same island and news travels fast, surely they would know if Label was visiting, right? This seems to indicate that Sable and Mabel are probably aware of Label’s visit, but are either too busy or don’t care to see their estranged sister.
This also raises the question: just why is Label on the player’s island? She claims to be there in search of inspiration for her clothing brand, but all the player has to verify these statements are Label’s own words and Sable’s. Is it possible that Label’s pursuit of happiness has failed her and she’s too afraid to face her siblings? Or is it something else entirely?
Still, there’s some silver lining when it comes to the Able Sisters’ relationship. In New Leaf, she works as the accessory clerk in the Able Sisters’ shop. While she doesn’t meet with her sisters directly in New Horizons, her Tailor Tickets are redeemable at the Able Sisters shop to purchase an item worth 3,000 bells or less.
Who knows, maybe in the next New Horizons update we’ll learn more about the sisters’ relationship.
