While Media Molecule’s Dreams is a game that sells itself on letting a player’s imagination run free, Animal Cross: New Horizons is making its own strides on user content. In another edition of wonderment over New Horizon recreations, its worth a look at another Pokemon mashup.

While there have been previous Pokemon recreations like a player turning their island into Battle Frontier, this recent one takes it a step further. Redditor The-Nooksters was not simply going to recreate Pallet Town from the original Pokemon games – they set out to recreate the entire opening and gameplay.

The Nooksters posted two videos on their YouTube channel, both providing a glimpse at a new kind of New Horizons mashup. The Nooksters went about naming this project “Pocket Villagers: Blue Horizons.” In this strange transformation, villagers now serve as surrogate Pokemon ripe for companionship and battling glory.

The Nooksters went above and beyond at recreating the original opening gameplay section of 1996’s Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. After a 30-second intro riffing the originals, the “Pocket Villagers” title screen drops alongside Junichi Masuda’s original music. Then walks in Professor Hardwood who introduces the players to the world. If the name wasn’t indication enough, The Nooksters took a humorous tone in bringing the game to life.

While the Pallet town section deserves love, the real showstopper of The Nooksters project is finally putting the villagers to battle. After the protagonist and his rival have chosen their respective Villagers, a quick transition happens and the battle begins. There are not many moves shown outside of a very in-your-face tackle but its charming and well done nonetheless. Its very much worth noting that the rival is aptly named Seabass in reference to a very tired joke.

The Nookster’s recent mashup is just another in a growing collection of users pushing their Animal Crossing: New Horizons worlds to the limit. Since its launch on March 20, players are making the most of the creative tools at their tips. Just two weeks ago a players made a Last Airbender island while others took a darker turn by recreating classic horror films.

This likely won’t be the last mashup of Animal Crossing meeting Pokemon, but there is no denying The Nooksters efforts will be a hard one to top.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now on Nintendo Switch.
