Yesterday evening, Nintendo revealed that an Animal Crossing: New Horizons themed Switch console would be releasing alongside the game. Coming a week early, it didn’t include a copy of the latest Animal Crossing, but it did have an absolutely gorgeous looking dock and pair of Joy-Con. Fans were foaming at the mouth since they already own a Switch, but are dying to get this variation.

Thankfully, a solution exists. While you won’t get the neato pattern on the back of your console, Nintendo will be selling standalone versions of both the dock and the Joy-Con. Currently, they are only available in Japan, but none of the hardware on the Switch is region locked. You can safely import these and use them on your American Switch.

That’s great if you aren’t in the market to add a second console to your life. The price of both of these together is a little extravagant (around $136), but it’s still much cheaper than dropping $300 on a console you don’t need. Considering the Joy-Con also frequently crap out for no reason, it’s not like buying an extra pair would be a bad investment.

It may be more economical to go this route, but there are some benefits to grabbing a new Switch. The main reason you’d consider this is for the improved battery life that newer Switch revisions have. You’ll lose out on the ability to hack your console, but then that isn’t officially supported by Nintendo anyway.

I think I’d just go for the dock here. For some reason, the US version runs $90 at most retailers. Getting a spare dock for $60 is a steal, not to mention it has a fabulous theme. How can I say no to that? I need more Animal Crossing in my life. Stop teasing me, Nintendo!

Pre-orders for both the dock and the Joy-Con will go live on February 8, 2020. Currently, they are only available through the My Nintendo Japan store. The dock will set you back ¥6,578 while the Joy-Con are going for ¥8,228. There are bound to be more retailers selling these by the time New Horizons releases, so make sure to keep your eyes peeled.
