Although your first instinct while covering holes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons might be to use your shovel, it turns out that kicking dirt over those holes is slightly more efficient. Not only is the method a bit faster, but you can maintain the durability of your shovel at the same time.

A Reddit user by the name of The Nooksters posted a side-by-side comparison video of both methods, in which they dug and covered 40 holes: once with a shovel, and once by kicking dirt. In the time that it took the user to cover 40 holes by kicking dirt, they had only covered 37 holes with the shovel.

Others chimed in that the shovel is best used for covering holes near flowers to avoid accidentally picking up the flowers instead. Another user added that they don’t even bother to cover the holes, because Animal Crossing automatically fills them when you relaunch the game.

Whatever your hole-covering method may be, it doesn’t bare all that much weight in the long run. Sure, you might get the job done slightly faster if you cover the holes by kicking dirt, but Animal Crossing is a game that exists to avoid competitive details such as these. Sit back, relax, and enjoy building your island!
