With 35 different species of villagers available in the brand new Animal Crossing: New Horizons game, players aren’t likely to grow tired easily. There are a ton of animals with distinct personalities and phrases to pick from, based on the kind of island each player is looking to build.

Birds are one of the species that generally don’t get a lot of love from fans. They tend to be a bit goofy looking, which is probably why they end up not getting picked for most people’s islands. That being said, that doesn’t meant there aren’t a few worthy inhabitants to take along on an island getaway journey. Here are the best.

10 Sparro

One of the more obvious puns in the game, Sparro is a villager that’s designed to look like an actual sparrow. His colors and character design are very natural and bird-like, even if he has a pair of slightly creepy-looking button eyes. He’s often seen with a black BB shirt, and has the jock personality type.

Sparro’s bird design makes him one of the better birds in the franchise, and he’s usually had a very cool traditional Japanese home.

9 Lucha

Lucha, as his name implies, is modeled after professional wrestlers, since his name is inspired by the world “wrestle” in Spanish. His design isn’t very bird-like, but it’s definitely quite memorable thanks to the wrestling mask that he has on his head. Moreover, he has a smug personality that reflects his confident appearance.

The best part about Lucha is the house that he gets when he moves in. His entire theme is based around wrestling, and his house will usually feature a wrestling ring and a bunch of workout equipment.

8 Robin

Robin is a pretty unique snooty villager. While most snooty villagers very clearly have makeup on and tend to have feminine appearances, Robin isn’t as flashy. She’s of course inspired by the actual bird of her namesake, which shows in her design as well.

Robin’s house is a pretty fancy one, with expensive wooden walls and a bath, along with other luxury and spa-inspired items that fit her superficial personality.

7 Jay

Confident and outgoing, Jay is the perfect jock for any player’s island. He’s designed very much after an actual jay bird, which is obvious in his colorful but somewhat realistic character design. Although he has a goofy appearance, he has his own charm thanks to his big eyes and energetic personality.

Jay’s house has usually had a vintage type of design, with very decorative floors and walls, as well as wide variety of musical instruments.

6 Jacques

A French bird, Jacques comes across as a music enthusiasts and hipster-like bird. His design is clearly inspired by an actual person rather than a bird, since it appears that he has a goatee under his chin. He also wears a green hat.

Jacques is a smug villager, so he’s usually well-behaved but also has a flair for arrogance. His house will end up being the mix of a bar and a nightclub, with very minimalist walls and floors.

5 Twiggy

For a burst of good mood and energy, Twiggy is a perfect choice for any island. She has a super bright yellow appearance that could either make her a chick or a parakeet. Despite her somewhat angry-looking eyebrows, she actually has the peppy personality, which means she’ll always be extremely excited and happy.

Twiggy’s house has a simple, somewhat girly look. She’ll furnish it with wooden block furniture and other cute, pink decor. Overall, she one of the more noteworthy bird villagers.

4 Admiral

Another rather special bird, Admiral has a look that isn’t easily forgotten by anyone. He looks a lot like an Angry Birds character due to his green, cranky face. This is appropriate because Admiral’s personality is that of a cranky villager, so he’ll often come across as rude and a complainer. Still, he’s one-of-a-kind.

Admiral’s house has changed slightly over the years, from a traditional Japanese home to a more official military-style house, both of which fit his cranky, stubborn personality.

3 Peck

The cool thing about Peck is that not only is his name a reference to birds in general, but it also refers to pectoral muscles, which in turn suits his jock type personality. Peck might have slightly creepy white button eyes, but among all the birds he has one of the best, most consistent character designs.

Peck’s house is also a gold mine for any retro childhood toy and design lovers as it perfectly imitates those early-2000s boys’ rooms with dinosaur toys, camo wallpaper and racecar bed.

2 Midge

Midge is absolutely adorable. Not only is she a pink bird, which in itself is insanely cute, but she also have the sweetest eyes and tiny swirls in her cheeks that just make her look incredibly wholesome. On top of having an excellent character design, she’s a normal personality type villager, making her easy to deal with.

Her house is just as sweet as she is. Most of the furniture is a pastel yellow shade with heart details and an overall lovely, girly appearance.

1 Piper

No doubt the most normal-looking bird out of all Animal Crossing birds, Piper gets extra points just for having a simple yet clean character design. She has super cute eyes and a fabulous color scheme. As a peppy villager, she’s always going to be infectiously excited and happy.

Piper’s house tends to have a more modern flare to it, and it’ll be fascinating to see what she picks when invited to a New Horizons island.
