There are a lot of different types of villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, each with their own distinct personalities, but players can only invite up to ten of them to live on their island at once. This is disappointing, since Animal Crossing: New Horizons boasts nearly four hundred different villager options, and seeing the same faces every single day quickly becomes tiresome.

Thankfully, there’s a way for players to get rid of the villagers they already have accumulated and start from scratch, but unfortunately this means evicting one of the Animal Crossing villagers who has already taken up residence on the island. As of right now, there is no way to increase the amount of villagers Animal Crossing: New Horizons allows on an island past the ten villager limit, which means players looking to change out one of their current villagers for a new Animal Crossing character could be taking a pretty big risk.

If a player hasn’t spent a lot of time in the world of Animal Crossing, whether it be in New Horizons or one of the previous Animal Crossing games like New Leaf, they may think that at some point down the line they can unlock some sort of ability which would allow for more villagers on their island. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, no such feature exists – players will always have to kick someone out if they want someone else to move in.

Losing An Animal Crossing Villager Can Be Sad

This decision is made a little bit easier if one Animal Crossing: New Horizons villager happens to be more annoying than all the others, or if the player simply doesn’t care about the feelings of the fictional animals. For players who grow attached to their Animal Crossing neighbors, however, having to say goodbye can be a sad experience – one made even sadder if the villager who shows up to replace them turns out to be even worse than the one before, or if the Animal Crossing villager wants to move away themselves but the player wants them to stay.

While ten villagers doesn’t seem like enough to stimulate the entire economy of an island (especially when it is clear it’s the Animal Crossing: New Horizons players who are doing all the actual heavy lifting) it does make sense to have some sort of cap on Animal Crossing’s available villager numbers. If all 397 Animal Crossing villagers were allowed to live on the same island at once, it would be quite a cramped arrangement. Until New Horizons offers players some sort of DLC which will increase the final size of a player’s island in ACNH (or allow them to have more than one) they will have to be content with picking and choosing between ten Animal Crossing: New Horizons villagers at a time.
