Anne Hathaway says she was the ninth choice for the role of Andrea “Andy” Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada. By now, the Meryl Streep film is the stuff of legend. The 2006 movie showed off a new side to Streep and introduced the world to Emily Blunt, but Hathaway’s performance was arguably front and center. Hathaway’s Andy is a newcomer to the fashion industry when she begins working at Runway Magazine, a publication spearheaded by Streep’s Miranda Priestly.

The Devil Wears Prada is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger. The novel itself is also part autobiography, chronicling Weisberger’s time as assistant to legendary fashion editor Anna Wintour, who runs Vogue to this day. The Devil Wears Prada was well-received by critics for its incisive look at the Manhattan fashion world and has gone on to become a bona fide classic. To this day, many enjoy revisiting the movie and quoting its countless iconic lines. According to Hathaway, though, the film could have looked a lot different.

Appearing on RuPaul’s Drag Race (via Harper’s Bazaar), Hathaway stated she wasn’t originally the first pick for Andy. The actress revealed she was instead the ninth choice for the film:

I will give you some tea: I was the ninth choice for Devil Wears Prada. But I got it! Hang in there, never give up.

Hathaway had some stiff competition. While it’s unknown who else was considered for the role, the studio’s first choice was reportedly Rachel McAdams. McAdams was fresh off The Notebook and Mean Girls when she was offered the role of Andy, but the actress turned it down. Whoever else was between McAdams and Hathaway either turned it down or it just didn’t work out, a twist of fate that seems meant to be. Hathaway is perfect in the part, and it’s hard to imagine The Devil Wears Prada without her.

While Hathaway had been a lead actress for some time before The Devil Wears Prada, the film helped launch her to a new level of stardom. Seeing Hathaway hold her own opposite Streep proved her acting chops more than any other job she had yet to take on. Similarly, her transformation from bumbling newcomer to fashion icon in the film is one that mirrors her debut role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. It’s safe to say Hathaway was destined for the role of Andy, and The Devil Wears Prada is all the better because of her performance.
