Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has a new Cassie Lang in Kathryn Newton, and her dream has come true in joining the MCU. Newton’s casting was announced at Disney’s 2020 Investor’s Day Presentation. She’ll be taking over the role of Scott Lang’s daughter from Emma Fuhrmann, who portrayed Ant-Man’s daughter in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. Ant-Man 3 remains undated, but Wasp actress Evangeline Lilly revealed that filming starts this summer for what looks to be a late-2022 or early 2023 release date.

Newton has been acting since she was a little girl, but she broke through after her role in the HBO series Big Little Lies. Newton went on to star in Blockers before taking on 2020’s Freaky. As a newcomer to the MCU, she’ll be joined by Lovecraft Country’s Johnathan Majors as villain Kang the Conqueror, which points to a larger role for Newton’s Cassie Lang and the rest of the new, young heroes that are slated to be introduced to the MCU over the next few years.

While Newton can’t say much about her role for fear of spoiling what are likely some major surprises, she did tell THR that her role in the MCU is a dream come true. Newton explains that she’s not on set yet, but that when the time comes, it will be a surreal moment for the actress. Newton says that, if asked a few years ago, a starring role in an MCU project would’ve been her dream job. The actress also revealed that she’s a big Marvel fan, so it sounds like Cassie Lang is in good hands.

I still feel like I can’t talk about it because I’m not on set and I just don’t want to jinx anything until I’m really there, making the movie. But it’s a dream come true for me to be a part of the MCU, and I’m so honored and so grateful because I love the Marvel universe so much. Five years ago, if you asked me what my dream was, I would have said, ‘To be in a Marvel movie.’

Newton’s casting came as a surprise when it was announced, not only because another actress had already taken on the role, but because it was a sign that Marvel has big plans for the character. In the comics, Cassie Lang becomes Stature, and it looks like that’s exactly what’ll happen when her character is reintroduced in Ant-Man 3. Whether or not it will be an origin story remains to be seen, but Newton isn’t the only young actor to take on a Marvel role.

Newton is just one of several in a new generation of heroes that Marvel is gearing up to introduce. Hailee Steinfeld will make her debut as Kate Bishop in this year’s Hawkeye. Kamala Khan and Ironheart will also be introduced in their own Marvel shows, and America Chavez will make her MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. With Wiccan and Speed being introduced in WandaVision, the signs are all there that the MCU is getting ready for a Young Avengers story. This could come to a head through the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so Newton has more than a few reasons to be excited about her MCU debut.
