Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment has announced that it has banned over 350,000 players on PC due to cheating.

The free-to-play battle royale released just over a month ago and has attracted over 50 million players since then, so we can imagine that there were a few players out there who attempted to cheat their way through the game.

Apparently, it’s been way more than a few, with well over a quarter of a million players getting kicked out for trying to circumvent and manipulate the rules, so to speak.

Respawn made the announcement via a recent Reddit post.

“We’ve banned over 355K players on PC through Easy-Anti-Cheat,” it reported. “The service works but the fight against cheaters is an ongoing war that we’ll need to continue to adapt to and be very vigilant about fighting. We take cheating very seriously and care deeply about the health of Apex Legends for all players.”

“We are working on improvements to combat cheaters and we’re going to have to be pretty secretive about our plans. Cheaters are crafty and we don’t want them to see us coming.”

Respawn happens to be pretty crafty too, given that it was able to keep silent about the game before springing it on everyone last month. While it plans to keep things on the low when it comes to tracking down cheaters, it has shared a few of its methods to prevent cheating in the future:

– We are reaching out and working directly with experts, both within and outside of EA, in this area that we can learn from.

– Scaling up our anti-cheat team so we have more dedicated resources.

– We are adding a report feature on PC to report cheaters in-game that goes directly to Easy-Anti-Cheat.

The devs are also aware of a problem pertaining to players who spam character select and the drop before disconnecting shortly after.

Respawn claims to be keeping its strategy to combat the practice “close to the chest” so that would-be cheaters don’t have the time to figure out workarounds. However, it has also promised to implement changes.
