Apple How To Apply For A Security Research Modified iPhone

Apple is currently taking applications for participants in its Developers Program to receive a ‘Security Research’ modified iPhone. This seems to be another tactic in Apple’s invested interest in security on iPhone devices, following the various improvements included with iOS 14. Here’s what you need to know before applying for a modified iPhone.

The iOS 14 reveal boasted the platform’s new security feature that would alert users when an app is using information that has been copied off their universal clipboard. iOS 14 beta testers are currently taking advantage of this feature and receiving alerts whenever their information is being accessed. For example, many users have discovered that the social media app TikTok is accessing the universal clipboard without permission. This issue only adds to the many privacy concerns surrounding TikTok.

The ‘Security Research Device’ or SRD is a part of a new program Apple is promoting in order to help the company quickly address security issues and bugs on its iPhone platform. The unit allows researchers in the program to access the shell, run tools, and choose entitlements all for the purpose of exposing the weaknesses of the device. The program does have its limitations, as Apple will retain the phone as company property and any discoveries made on the device or expected to be reported immediately to Apple and app developers.

How To Obtain An Apple SRD

In order to receive one of Apple’s ‘Security Research Devices,’ you will need to already be a part of the company’s Developer Program. Once enrolled you will be able to apply for an SRD although not everyone who applies will be eligible to obtain a unit. Apple is selecting applicants who have a proven track record in exposing security flaws on its hardware as well as other modern platforms and operating systems. Restrictions will also apply to anyone in any U.S. embargoed country or those employed by Apple within the last 12 months. If even after meeting all the requirements and still not receiving an SRD, which is very possible given how limited the program is, there is still the chance to be selected for an opportunity next year, since applicants will be reconsidered annually.

Apple taking interest in users discovering security flaws is a good sign for the future of the platform. Many blackhat hackers are already using their expertise to expose flaws in iOS without a partnership from the company. By making it easier for hackers to expose these weaknesses, and creating a platform to directly contact Apple and developers about the problems, helps both the company and those who use the company’s products. Hopefully, this is only the beginning of Apple creating a closer relationship with its user base to help make the iPhone safer for everyone.
