Apple Watch Emulator Lets You Play Pokemon Yellow

Pokemon Yellow remains one of the most innovative Pokemon titles, with a game that sees players essentially become Ash Ketchum while they live out the storyline from the Pokemon anime series’ earliest years. Now, a new Game Boy emulator has been launched for the Apple Watch that will let gamers download and play the title from the comfort of their wrist.

Yesterday, Gabriel O’Flaherty-Chan, an iOS software developer, unveiled his Game Boy emulator on Github. The emulator has been affectionately dubbed Giovanni, in reference to the mastermind behind Pokemon’s omnipresent Team Rocket. O’Flaherty Chan detailed his process on a lengthy Github post that also includes GIFs and photos of the process he went through to arrive at the finished product.

O’Flaherty Chan began work on the app because of being disappointed with how few games were available on the Apple Watch. After making his own game, O’Flaherty-Chan decided porting a game over to the Apple Watch would be better, and that he would need an emulator to do so, and so Giovanni was born. O’Flaherty Chan is quick to point out that the emulator is far from perfect, however:

“As you can see, it’s a bit sluggish and unresponsive, but as a prototype, I think it answers the question of ‘is this possible?'”

Another issue for the emulator has been button mapping, as the Apple Watch screen is very small and has a touch-based interface. O’Flaherty Chan used a combination of screen-panning, Digital Crown rotation, and screen-tapping to eliminate the need for every button except Select, Start, and B, with the A button being used by simply tapping the right side of the screen.

O’Flaherty Chan’s emulator might not be optimal just yet, but it’s functional and, from the looks of the GIFs shared, playable enough to enjoy without too many problems. It could be a welcome break for those looking for a mobile experience but have been burnt out by Pokemon GO’s slow update schedule – or just those fans who happen to own an Apple Watch and want to relive one of the all-time greatest Pokemon games ever released.
