Both Tilda Swinton’s The Ancient One and Cate Blanchett’s Hela could appear in Avengers: Infinity War, if recent comments made by Mark Ruffalo are any indicator. After tagging along with the God of Thunder during Thor: Ragnarok, Hulk/Bruce Banner (Ruffalo) will finally make his way back to Earth in Infinity War (having been away for two years), only to realize that the whole universe is now in danger from the threat posed by the Mad Titan Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Swinton’s Ancient One was introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Doctor Strange as the Sorcerer Supreme’s mentor. She passed away, however, after being severely injured during a battle with Kaecilius and his henchmen, raising questions about how she will be able to return in Infinity War. Hela, of course, is fresher in people’s minds, being the big bad of Ragnarok. It’s not altogether clear what happened to her after Surtur destroyed Asgard in that film, but with no definitive fate, it is certainly possible that Hela made it out of the destruction alive and will somehow be connected to Thanos during the next Avengers movie.

During an interview on Michael Rapaport’s podcast I am Rapaport, Ruffalo was asked which actors that he has had the pleasure of working with have left the best impression on him. After naming Joaquin Phoenix, Ruffalo then name-dropped Swinton, who he suggest he had recently worked with, followed by Blanchett. That doesn’t automatically mean that Ruffalo worked with both Swinton and Blanchett on Infinity War, but it’s certainly a real possibility, all the more so because the three seemingly don’t have any other projects that are in active development that they might have collaborated on together.

It’s best you take this with a grain of salt; after all, it is by no means any confirmation. Still, as indicated earlier, Hela could make for another interesting wrinkle to the larger conflict with Thanos during Infinity War. As for the Ancient One, it’s quite hard to pinpoint how she would figure into the film, although it’s possible that she could appear in a flashback, seeing as was the primary caretaker of the Time Stone for many years. Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony have promised that there will be a lot of surprise characters in the movie, so pretty much anyone who has appeared in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film in the past is fair game to show up when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes battle Thanos.

Marvel Studios is filming Avengers: Infinity War and its still-untitled sequel, Avengers 4 back-to-back, and sometimes actors mix up the two, so it’s also possible that Ruffalo was referring to Avengers 4 rather than Infinity War. Either way, the next two Avengers film aim to wrap up Phase 3 of the MCU with a bang, so the more the merrier.

Accidental movie fan who is perpetually curious, Ana rekindled her love for writing several years back and married it with everything pop culture. The result is a passionate young writer who could ramble (and of course, pen) about films and series multiple hours a day. She has a soft spot for The Lion King, old songs, and home design; is currently obsessed with old sitcoms (The Golden Girls!); and won’t dare watch any horror films although she’s (ironically) dying to see one. Though a bit late to the party and was an actual Force non-believer, she now finds the Star Wars franchise quite fascinating (fun fact: it was a crazy Jar Jar Binks/Sith theory that drew her in).
