Are The OnePlus Buds Z2 Waterproof Things You Should Know Before Buying

Waterproof protection is one of the most essential features for any wireless headphones — but is this available on the OnePlus Buds Z2? Since the original OnePlus One launched in April 2014, OnePlus has gone from an unknown underdog to one of the more prevalent brands in the consumer tech space. Today, the company sells flagship and budget smartphones, wearables, and even TVs.

Another product niche OnePlus has broken into is wireless earbuds. The company’s first attempt with the OnePlus Buds was met with mediocre reception. However, each subsequent release has made OnePlus’s earbud formula better and better. The OnePlus Buds Z deliver a really decent listening experience for just $49. The OnePlus Buds Pro offer every flagship feature imaginable for less money than AirPods Pro and Galaxy Buds Pro. And, most recently, the OnePlus Buds Z2 deliver features like ANC and long battery life for only $99.

In many ways, the Buds Z2 are OnePlus’s most compelling earbud package yet. They manage to deliver about 90 percent of the OnePlus Buds Pro experience for $50 less. However, does that 90 percent include proper waterproofing? The OnePlus Buds Z2 are backed by an IP55 dust and water resistance rating. This means the earbuds are protected against dust that could otherwise interfere with their functionality. Furthermore, the IP55 rating protects the Buds Z2 against low-pressure streams of water. That means the OnePlus Buds Z2 aren’t technically waterproof and shouldn’t be submerged underwater. However, splashes and quick rinses are totally fine. The keyword here is ‘water-resistant,’ and not ‘waterproof.’

The OnePlus Buds Z2 Also Have A Water-Resistant Case

Along with an IP55 rating for the earbuds themselves, the included charging case has its own water-resistance of IPX4. That IPX4 rating keeps the case safe from light water splashes — but that’s about it. It’s not guaranteed to survive pressured streams of water like the actual earbuds, nor does it have any official resistance against dust. While the lower rating is disappointing, it’s also worth pointing out that many earbuds in this price range tend to omit any water resistance for their charging case. The fact that OnePlus includes it at all is worth commending.

While the OnePlus Buds Z2 may not be completely waterproof, the water resistance they do have is quite good. The earbuds are safe from dust, sweat, splashes of water, and can even survive a quick rinse in the sink to get clean. The case isn’t as protected, but it still offers some resistance to water here and there. For $99 wireless earbuds, that’s a pretty great offer — and a further testament to how much value OnePlus crammed into the Buds Z2.
