Army of Thieves is the prequel movie to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead, but it is the exact opposite of a zombie movie. Part of Netflix’s late October 2021 releases, Army of Thieves is a tongue-in-cheek heist movie that revolves around safecracker extraordinaire Sebastian, also known as Ludwig Dieter, who is played by the movie’s director and star Matthias Schweighöfer. While it is the second movie in the Army of the Dead franchise, Army of Thieves is nothing like a zombie film.
Ludwig, who seeks to escape his mundane life as a bank teller and unsuccessful YouTuber, is convinced by a gang of international thieves to become their safecracker in a heist involving the first three of the master locksmith Hans Wagner’s legendary safes. Apart from being notoriously difficult to crack, Wagner’s four safes are also based on the four operas of Richard Wagner’s Norse mythology-inspired Der Ring des Nibelungen. These are the Rheingold, Die Walkure or the Valkyrie, the Siegfried, and the Götterdämmerung, also known as the Twilight of the Gods. Each of the members of Army of Thieves’ main cast has a part to play in their planned heists, and Ludwig’s role is to crack the first three safes.
Army of Thieves is more of a traditional heist movie rather than a zombie film like Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. Although the zombies show up in the news and Ludwig’s dreams, they never really factor into the story. In fact, save for Hans Wagner himself at the beginning of the film, when Ludwig tells the story of how Wagner locked himself in a safe that was thrown into the ocean, no one dies throughout the movie. Indeed, the legend of Wagner’s safes, and Ludwig and Gwendoline’s obsession with Wagner’s work, are the main focus of Army of Thieves, setting up the importance of the Götterdämmerung in Army of the Dead.
Rather than focusing on the outbreak, the story of Army of Thieves uncloaks its shared universe with Army of the Dead, painting a more detailed picture of the franchise as a whole. Instead of surviving the apocalypse, Army of Thieves’ group of experts need to worry about cracking not just one, but three Wagner safes, all without getting caught by Interpol. Moreover, while the amount locked inside the three safes in Army of Thieves is around the same amount as the Götterdämmerung in Army of the Dead, for Ludwig and Gwendoline, the money is secondary. As Ludwig explains, for Hans Wagner, his intricate safes are puzzles that can only be solved by those who are truly worthy of the secrets contained within. And it is Ludwig’s quest and destiny to be worthy of Wagner’s designs.
Although Army of Thieves is the prequel to Army of the Dead, it eschews the zombie narrative and puts its own spin on the classic heist. At the same time, Army of Thieves’ connection to the original movie helps in setting up a wider setting — and this could possibly pave the way for a third Army movie down the line.
