Warning: The following contains SPOILERS for Batwoman season 2, episode 14, “And Justice For All.”

The final scene of the Batwoman episode “And Justice For All” suggested that Luke Fox, the tech guru of the Arrowverse Bat Team, may have been killed. While the episode ended with Luke’s final fate uncertain, the advertisements for the next episode heavily hinted that this could be the end for the idealistic engineer.

Systematic racism has been a reoccurring theme throughout Batwoman season 2 and the episode “And Justice For All” brought it front and center, with most of the series’ Black protagonists being arrested after speaking out against an effort by white police officers to shut down a fundraiser for a local community center following a noise complaint. Ryan Wilder, Luke Fox and Sophie Moore spent most of the episode in a holding cell, where they encountered a car thief named Eli, who cynically tried to win their sympathy by giving the Black Power salute and saying “Power to the People.” Later in the episode, after having been released thanks to the efforts of Ryan’s new love interest, Imani, Luke spotted Eli while he was in the middle of trying to break into a car.

Luke Fox took photos of Eli in action before confronting him, hoping to talk him into giving up his life of crime. Unfortunately, a Crows Security patrol vehicle happened to pass by at that moment and the officer driving the vehicle was Russell Tavaroff; a reoccurring character with a reputation for being excessively brutal, even by the standards of the Crows. Seeing an opportunity, Eli claimed that Luke Fox had been stealing the car and attacked him after he tried to stop him. While pleading his innocence, Luke pulled his phone from his coat pocket so that he could show Officer Tavaroff the photos he had taken. Trigger-happy as usual, Tavaroff drew his service weapon and fired three shots into Luke’s abdomen. The episode ended with a stunned Luke dropping his phone and falling back onto the pavement, as he clutched at his wound and passed out.

The promotional ads for the next episode of Batwoman, “Armed Suspect,” strongly suggest that Luke will die as a result of his wounds. The preview featured a clip of Ryan Wilder fighting Officer Tavaroff as Batwoman, while talking about how it should have been her instead of Luke. There was also footage of a tearful Ryan being hugged by Sophie Moore, after a woman said to “open your eyes before anybody else has to die,” suggesting that someone one had, in fact, just died – presumably Luke.

On the other hand, there has been no indication before now that actor Camrus Johnson, who plays Luke Fox, had any indication of leaving Batwoman and was being written out of the show. While other Arrowverse series have killed off major supporting characters or written actors out of the show without warning, this usually occurred as part of a major event or a season opener. A good example of this is the recent slow build to Carlos Valdes’ departure from The Flash and the role of Cisco Ramon.

Another possibility emerges when one considers the comics, where Luke Fox played a more active role in the defense of Gotham City, fighting crime as the vigilante Batwing. The Batwing comics also introduced Russell Tavaroff as a childhood friend of Luke Fox, who became his greatest enemy as a supervillain called Menace. It doesn’t seem like a coincidence that it was Officer Tavaroff who shot Luke in the closing scene of “And Justice For All.” Indeed, it seems a safe bet that Luke’s brush with death may be used to set him on the road to becoming Batwing in the Arrowverse. While it’s possible Batwoman utilized the name as a random Easter egg with no grand plan in place, it does not seem likely. Nor does it seem likely that the writers of Batwoman would kill Luke Fox off in such an unceremonious fashion.
