Assassin’s Creed Infinity is still in early-development, so fans likely won’t see any public updates about a release date for quite awhile. For a series whose worlds are arguably too big, they’re about to get way bigger. Both Schreier’s article and Ubisoft’s update state that one reason for switching to live-service is to try and make Assassin’s Creed feel more cohesive as a franchise. By switching to this new model, Ubisoft can introduce multiple time periods in one title instead of “continuing to pass the baton from game to game.” This is likely where the bulk of their effort will go and the combat and traversal gameplay will likely stay the same.

It’s also safe to assume that the switch to this new model is likely Ubisoft following a growing trend that is proving to be profitable despite its sometimes controversial nature. To see how this trend is impacting the games industry, look no further than to WB Games who’s now focused on the live-service model for future games. Schreier points out in the aforementioned article that companies see the profitability in this model, and for Ubisoft, the announcement was met with rising stock value.

Assassins Creed Infinity – Story Details

It seems certain that the future of the franchise, or at least the near future, will be joining the likes of Fortnite as a live service game, though it’s less certain what that could mean for Assassin’s Creed stories going forward. Ubisoft is confident that it will exceed the expectations of fans and lead to the changes they want to see in the series. The hope for the studio is that this transition will allow the focus of development to center on talent and leadership that can adapt the game in real time to the desires of fans. Games like the aforementioned Fortnite, Apex Legends, and even Destiny have shown that this model can work if done well, including in storytelling. While it’s far too early to see if Assassin’s Creed Infinity will join those titles in reputation, the best-case scenario is that it will satisfy both its developers and its fans.
