So, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey has just arrived, and fans have spent a happy weekend journeying around its vast and Ancient world. A few days are what all determined gamers need to find all kinds of curious easter eggs, and this Black Panther-related reference is the first big one (although it’s really not that big).

For the uninitiated, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey takes place during the ancient Peloponnesian War, a great conflict between the city-states of Greece. The player chooses which side they will fight for, the Peloponnesian League with Sparta at the helm or the Delian League, led by Athens.

The action takes place around four centuries before Bayek’s Egyptian adventure in Assassin’s Creed Origins. This time, though, we’re taking the whole sprawling open world thing to the next level, with a truly awe-inspiring map to explore. Which is the name of the game, after all: exploring, not simply traveling across vast empty plains.

Needless to say, determined as gamers are, there are those of us who are out to discover every little inch of Ubisoft’s latest. It was crucial that the team deliver not only a large world, but one that is alive with content. Not just sidequests and collectibles, but quirky little touches, references and easter eggs too.

As Comic Book reports, one of these refers to one of the MCU’s biggest recent hit, Black Panther. At the Gortyn Waterfall in Messera, Athens’ territory, you’ll come across a scene that’s all too familiar to Marvel-loving moviegoers: two men locked in battle in shallow water, in a precarious position on a stone ledge.

A few onlookers cheer from the water’s edge, and it’s tough to tell whether this is Wakandan-style politics in action or just a rather theatrical fight. Either way, it’s a neat little touch. It’s not out of place, but will earn a wry smile from those that appreciate it.

IGN grabbed footage of the easter egg and spliced it with the scene from Black Panther, showing the similarities. They then did what any decent, upstanding member of society would do: they interrupted the fight and kicked one of the combatants off the ledge, as per the movie.

It might be a little inconsequential, but fans of these sorts of pop culture references will get a kick out of it nonetheless. These are the sort of things (Marvel’s Spider-Man and its Grand Theft Auto IV easter egg is another example) that give an open-world game just a little more character.
