Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is the ninth entry in the long-running franchise, originally released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2015. Like many other games in the series, AC Syndicate features single-player DLC missions to enhance its content, including Jack the Ripper, which debuted in December of that year.

The Jack the Ripper DLC is aptly named, as it focuses on the infamous English serial killer. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate takes place in London’s Victorian era and the Industrial Revolution. Set in in 1868, the main story follows two twin members of the Assassin Brotherhood, Jacob and Evie Frye, as they attempt to stop the Templars, who control the city, by taking over organized crime syndicates.

AC Syndicate’s Jack the Ripper DLC, however, actually takes place 20 years after the main story, making it a unique addition to the game’s canon. Here’s everything the expansion’s plot covers.

What Happens In AC Syndicate’s Jack the Ripper DLC

The AC Syndicate DLC is based on the real serial killer known as Jack the Ripper, who roamed the streets of London in 1888. Authorities were never able to confirm whether the 11 murders now associated with him were all the work of one person, but the sensationalism of the news coverage during the killing spree cemented Jack the Ripper as an infamous part of Western criminal history.

Part of this sensationalism included a letter, now believed by some to be a hoax, dated September 25, 1988, that was heavily circulated by the media. The AC Syndicate Jack the Ripper DLC begins by directly referencing this letter, as Jacob meets with Arthur Weaversbrook, owner of the fictional Weaversbrook Publishing, and encourages him to not publish it. However, Weaversbrook is too afraid to stop publication, believing Jack the Ripper will harm his family if he doesn’t comply with his demands.

Jack the Ripper’s primary targets, both in the game and real life, were Whitechapel sex workers. In AC Syndicate, a London sex worker named Nellie seeks out Jacob to provide him with information on the murderer’s next target. Eventually, Jack the Ripper begins to stalk Jacob for trying to interfere and attacks him. The police believe Jacob has been killed, and they inform Jacob’s sister Evie of as much when she returns to London from India.

Officer Frederick Abberline, one of the inspectors, also tells Evie he believes she is the last Assassin left in the city and, therefore, the only one who may be able to stop Jack the Ripper’s brutal killing spree. Evie tracks the Ripper to Jacob’s house, where he was attacked, and she is finally able to kill the murderer. Luckily for her, it also turns out her brother is still alive, so it’s a happy ending for everyone.

Like most old-school Assassin’s Creed games, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate is a blend of historical facts with bizarre, Assassin-based fiction, which even extends to its optional DLC about real-world murderer Jack the Ripper.
