Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed series may be renowned for its attention to detail, but it has been growing progressively larger and larger over the years. The last entry, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, was so large that most players just tuned out after several hours. It felt like you’d need to take a second job to ever finish the story, which is a massive problem for any game to have.

In the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Vahalla, Ubisoft has taken criticisms about Odyssey’s length to heart. A Tweet from Ubisoft’s head of communications for the Middle East, Malek Teffaha, states that the developers have addressed any concerns about the length and that Valhalla will not be the biggest or longest game in the series.

That might read like a step backward, but it is a pretty big change in the grand scheme of things. Larger game worlds do not always create better games. Assassin’s Creed titles have been notorious for their bloat and needlessly enlarging the maps has only been a negative for the series. Streamlining that design and focusing on what makes Assassin’s Creed so enjoyable can only mean good things.

Elsewhere, Ubisoft revealed the first gameplay trailer for Valhalla during this morning’s “Xbox 20/20” stream. It’s kind of a “blink and you’ll miss it” type of deal since I can’t really tell where the gameplay is. This is mostly a cinematic trailer that sets the stage instead of showing off anything players will actually be doing.

Still, the hype is building and fans are looking forward to this new installment. Through these recent comments, it seems like Ubisoft is doing everything it can to create the best entry in the series. With Valhalla launching on next-gen consoles, it would be smart to start off smaller instead of going big and causing launch issues.

One has to wonder how long it will keep using the Assassin’s Creed name. The last few entries have barely had anything to do with the original trilogy, let alone any of the subsequent installments between the original and Origins. It might be time for Ubisoft to put the series to beg and simply continue making historical fiction adventure games.
