Doom Eternal’s install size on Xbox One is just under 40 GB, which is a lot smaller than expected.

You can pre-order Doom Eternal now on the Microsoft store before its release on March 20th. As with every Microsoft Store entry, you get to see a few details about the game before you purchase it, and while most of the info displayed is already well known, one of the least-known aspects of the game has just been revealed.

Doom Eternal will be just 37.09 GB on your Xbox One’s hard drive. That’s absolutely minuscule in comparison to some first-person shooters, and way less than the original 2016 game’s 60.87 GB. Compare that to Metro Exodus at 65.4 GB, Rage 2 at 56.65 GB, or Wolfenstein: Youngblood at 41.9 GB.

At 37.09 GB, it’s also smaller than the expected PC install size. Game Debates reports an install file of 55 GB, which is comparable to the original Doom on PC.

The question is, how did Doom Eternal get to be so small with all the promised new content? Doom Eternal is supposed to have a bunch of additions, including new demons, weapons, and multiplayer game modes like Battlemode and Invasion. Sure, it’s possible that Bethesda was able to find efficiencies in the code, but the only other way to make Doom Eternal smaller is to simply not have as large of a single-player campaign.

With Doom Eternal being roughly two-thirds the size of the original Doom, this might mean that the game’s campaign is similarly only two-thirds the size. It might also mean that Bethesda is really leaning on those added multiplayer game modes in order to keep players interested in Doom Eternal after completing the campaign.

If so, it’ll be a bit of a bait-and-switch. Fans loved the surprise 2016 Doom remake for being a single-player campaign that made the player feel powerful. Taking that power away by distributing it to everyone equally in a multiplayer format defeats the point.

We’ll see when Doom Eternal arrives in March. At least the trailers look great.
