Remakes and remasters are big business in the video game world right now. 2021 was a huge year for what is now a massive branch of the industry. The Mass Effect trilogy was given new life via its Legendary Edition, Sonic Colors went Ultimate, and Rockstar introduced a whole new generation to its iconic trio of GTA PS2 games via The Trilogy. Yes, some of those examples were better received than others.

As for how far back studios are willing to go to bring a classic game into 2021, and now 2022, well, it seems there is no limit. Atari, a studio responsible for entertaining us long before PlayStation and Xbox went to war, has revealed Breakout is getting a makeover. Breakout: Recharged is more an entirely new game than a remaster, which makes sense when you consider the very first take on the game launched all the way back in 1976.

If the name Breakout isn’t ringing any bells, then a quick look at the trailer below should get them chiming. If it still doesn’t, the aim of the game is to break all the bricks on each level without letting the ball get past your paddle at the bottom of the screen. As you can see, Breakout: Recharged is a fair bit more than that. It reintroduces power-ups like multiball, and also welcomes some new ones like homing missiles.

Breakout: Recharged also introduces a co-op mode for those of you who have been waiting to play the game with a buddy for the last four decades. Or if you have just happened upon this article now and you prefer not to play your games alone. There’s also a challenge mode with 50 levels, each more difficult than the last, and perhaps the most popular of all, endless mode. Rack up the highest score possible and do what Breakout has really always been about, ranking as high on the leaderboard as possible.

Breakout will be the fifth Atari game to get the Recharged treatment following Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, and Black Widow. The fifth installment in the series will be available from February 10, 2022, on a number of different platforms including PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, and for the most authentic experience, the Atari VCS.
