Eren Yeager will go down as one of the greatest fictional characters in anime history. His transformation from an idealistic and overconfident child to a jaded yet overwhelmingly powerful adult is simply superb. Eren’s story is one of immense sadness and regret as he must continually question his resolve to exterminate all titans and cope with the consequences of his actions and failures.

Eventually, even Eren is not yet sure if he is still the hero of his story. Following only the anime through the first half of the final season, these ten best Eren Yeager moments are sure to make any fan nostalgic.

10 First Attack Titan Transformation

In the 104th Cadet Corps’ first mission, Eren sacrifices himself to save Armin from being eaten by a titan. While in the belly of that titan, Eren sees the horrors of humanity’s losing war where he witnesses the deformed corpses of his fellow Corps members. It’s the first time Eren’s confidence wanes as he questions his growth over the last 5 years.

Alone, depressed, and enraged, Eren vows to exterminate every single titan and shortly after emerges as the Attack Titan and massacres the other titans. In the most unimaginable of circumstances and before Eren is aware of his own powers, there is no apparent way to survive but he believes in himself nonetheless.

9 Fight to Plug Wall Rose

The Survey Corps rely on Eren to lift a giant boulder to plug the hole in Wall Rose and prevent more titans from entering the district.

However, Eren is initially unable to control the Attack Titan and even attacks Mikasa before knocking himself unconscious. With the Corps’ hopes in Eren seemingly dismayed, Eren recovers to plug the hole while Corps members rally and give their lives to protect him in the process.

This occurs at a crucial time when the military is trying to decide whether Eren should be executed or not. This scene represents not only Eren’s fight against the titans but also his immense value to humanity.

8 Fight Against Female Titan

While Eren’s first fight against the Female Titan ends in a swift defeat, the events leading up to it are pivotal. When the Female Titan initially appears, Levi gives Eren the choice to trust in his squad or to transform and fight. It is a difficult choice but reminiscing on the bonds that he has formed with Levi Squad, Eren entrusts the mission to them.

Unfortunately, the Female Titan escapes the Scouts’ trap and murders Levi’s squad. Once again, Eren watches friends die knowing that he could have prevented it. He questions himself and his resolve before madness overtakes him and he transforms to unwieldly battle the Female Titan where his roars of sadness can be heard throughout the entire forest.

7 Fight Against Annie

When Annie is revealed as the Female Titan, Eren immediately becomes disillusioned. He struggles to believe that the Female Titan who murdered his friends is the same comrade who trained with him for years. While she continues to kill more scouts, Eren is unable to transform due to his refusal to accept that Annie is a traitor.

Again, the scouts are counting on Eren and his resolve isn’t enough. Eventually, Eren transforms and engages in a true no-holds-barred battle to the death with Annie, nearly destroying the entire city. Even after he loses limbs, Eren continues to fight Annie until she is defeated.

However, Eren hesitates in the battle’s final decisive moment allowing Annie to freeze herself and evade questioning. Thus, humanity suffers another major blow with little to show for it.

6 Battle At Reiss Chapel

While in the titan cavern of Reiss Chapel, Rod Reiss shows Eren the memories of his father Grisha Yeager killing the royal children and stealing the founding titan. Feeling the enormous weight of his father’s sins, Eren decides that he should no longer be alive and it’s Historia’s birthright to eat him and retake the founding titan.

After Rod Reiss drinks the titan serum, his transformation destroys the cavern and Eren must find the confidence to protect the scouts from the impending collapse. Each scout member entrusts Eren with their life and, once again Levi gives Eren the choice of deciding who lives and who dies. Needless to say, Eren chooses humanity.

5 First Fight Against Reiner

The reveals of Reiner and Bertholdt are among the most epic moments of the series. For a second time, Eren is betrayed by scout comrades. Even after watching Reiner heal his wounds, Eren is immobilized by shock as Mikasa and the other scouts try to protect him.

Reminiscing on his memories with Reiner and Bertholdt and the stories they all shared about returning to their homes, an enraged Eren transforms and gives one of the best titan battles to date. Even during the fight, Eren can’t help but think about his admiration for Reiner. Realizing he cannot overpower the Armored Titan, he uses strategy to cripple Reiner.

While ultimately, a defeated Reiner relies on Bertholdt to rescue him and capture Eren, this battle represents the first time Eren fights without relying on pure brute force alone.

4 Defeating the Colossal Titan

Eren constantly finds himself between a rock and a hard place as he sits atop Wall Maria with the Colossal Titan in front and the Beast Titan behind and all hope seems diminished for the scouts. As if a role reversal on Eren’s first titan transformation in season one, Armin nearly gives his life to distract the Colossal Titan so that Eren can defeat Bertholdt and survive.

Soon after, the surviving scouts reach a divide on whether to revive Armin or Erwin. Letting go of his pride, Eren begs Levi to save Armin by injecting him with the titan serum to eat Bertholdt. Committing an act of treason, Eren raises his fists against Levi to protect his best friend and pours his heart out.

It’s a sorrowful scene where, atypically, Eren acts out of love instead of hate.

3 Battle Against Marley

In the battle against the Marley, Eren is undoubtedly at his most cunning. Eren’s major opponent is the Warhammer Titan whom he strikes before it even has time to complete its transformation with targeted attacks at the nape where the titan shifter typically resides.

As the battle continues, Eren strategically uses each of his titan transformations to assess the strength of the Warhammer until he uncovers the host and then cunningly uses the Jaw Titan to kill the crystallized Warhammer host in order to drink her spinal fluid. Moreover, before initiating this war, Eren put together a master plan with Zeke to have the scouts invade Marley, immobilize the other titan shifters, destroy Marley’s navy, and rescue them both.

2 Conversation with Reiner

After Eren has been hiding in Marley for months, he arranges a surreal conversation with Reiner where he admits that they are the same. He understands the motivations behind Reiner, Bertholdt, and Annie invading Paradis Island as he has now done the same to Marley.

Eren comes to see Marleyans as humans and even as good people. It is the peak of Eren’s self-hatred as he has now become the same as the people he swore to exterminate. It’s a twisting scene where lines are blurred between our chief protagonist and the main antagonist.

The moment goes beyond battle prowess and supernatural abilities to reach an emotional depth that is often not seen in fictional characters.

1 First Use of the Founding Titan

After the scouts rescue Eren from Reiner and Bertholdt, they must escape the horde of pure titans. Eren once again watches as his comrades are killed and sacrifice their life for him. However, this time he is too weak to transform due to battle injuries and witnesses the same titan who killed his mom also murder Hannes.

Pitted between Reiner and countless titans, the scouts are approaching their demise and Eren feels utterly powerless. He curses himself for being too weak and unable to do anything. It is the first time that Eren gives up and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Strengthened by Mikasa’s love, Eren regains his determination to fight and activates the power of the coordinate, a major turning point in the entire series.
