An Australian man who traveled nine miles to play Pokemon GO, has been fined $1,652 for violating the lockdown restrictions in Melbourne. The man, one of 172 individuals fined on Sunday for breaching the Chief Health Officer directions, was stopped as he made his way from Sunshine in the city’s east to Melbourne’s city center.

Of the 172 fines, 27 people ticketed for refusing to wear a mask while in public. Officers also conducted 4,366 spot checks and issued 22 fines at vehicle checkpoints. On Sunday, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews announced stage four restrictions as the state struggles with a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

The new lockdown, which is expected to last until at least September 13 only allows Melbourne residents to exercise for an hour a day and travel no more than three miles from home to go shopping. Only one person from each household is allowed to go shopping each day. Meanwhile, Metropolitan Melbourne will be subject to a curfew from 8 pm to 5 am, with some exemptions for essential workers.

In late March, a 77-year-old Spanish man was fined after being caught walking around Madrid playing Pokemon Go, a mobile game that requires users to walk out in the real world to catch virtual Pokemon. Spain, which became one of the first European countries to enforce a curfew and travel restrictions to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus, requested that citizens respect the lockdown and only go out when necessary. Spain has had 335,602 confirmed coronavirus cases and 28,445 deaths. There are currently 110,199 active cases.

According to the fine sheet, shared by the Policia Municipal de Madrid, the man was stopped in the Latina district of the city at 1:30 pm on Sunday, March 22, and told police that “he was hunting Pokemon.” Spanish officials had announced a national lockdown of two weeks on March 14, which was eventually extended until mid-June. Residents were only allowed to leave their homes to go to work, medical centers, banks, supermarkets, and pharmacies.
