WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Avengers #49!

As the ruler of Wakanda, the Black Panther has many enemies, but the King of Atlantis just may be his most deadly and a recent issue of Avengers confirms why Namor deserves a villainous turn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one of Marvel Comics’ first heroes, the Sub-Mariner has a long and tumultuous history with most characters in the Marvel Universe. From the Fantastic Four to the Uncanny X-Men, there’s nobody that Namor hasn’t fought alongside or against.

When it comes to his fellow king the Black Panther, Namor has a specifically strained relationship. Atlantis and Wakanda have gone to war more than once, and although both men have worked together on more than one occasion, that’s never stopped Namor from crossing the line. And in Avengers #49 by Jason Aaron and Javier Garrón, Namor confirms he’s more than ready to do so again if it benefits Atlantis.

With the Sub-Mariner’s recent conflicts against the surface world and even the Phoenix throwing Atlantis into chaos, the people of his undersea home are more than ready to dethrone the hot-tempered King Namor. As a multitude of challengers step forth within the Atlantean Coliseum to challenge him for his Coral Throne, Namor scoffs at any and all who think they could fill his shoes. And when the citizens themselves cry out for Namor’s abdication, the king says to them, “Which of you will spend seven lifetimes swimming through seas of blood? And all of eternity in the lake of fire? That is what it takes to be a king! That is Namor!” While it’s no surprise that Namor believes he’s the only one who can defend his home, it’s a bit unsettling how comfortable he is with the notion that his actions as king have permanently stained his soul.

After all, it’s not just that the Sub-Mariner does what is best for Atlantis. That would be justifiable and within his rights as the sovereign of his nation. Instead, Namor does whatever benefits Atlantis at that moment, regardless of concepts like good or evil. Namor has never been afraid to cross the line, but in recent years, his plans have grown darker to the point where he’s downright villainous. He wants to protect his home, and he’s doing so at the cost of not just his soul, but the rest of the world as well – with his vendetta against Wakanda being a prime example.

His predatory line of thinking puts him directly at odds with the more altruistic nation of Wakanda, and this would especially be the case in the MCU. Despite their time as allies, Namor and T’Challa have squared off on more than one occasion, and when Namor was possessed by the Phoenix Force during Avengers vs. X-Men, he nearly flattened Wakanda with a tremendous flood. Meanwhile, long after the superhuman conflict was over, Wakanda would retaliate with an all-out strike on Atlantis, which Namor never forgave. The two nations would battle for years, with Namor’s own ego and lust for dominance helping fuel the fire – something that fans would love to see translated to the big screen in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Wakanda is the most technologically advanced nation in the MCU, so it makes sense that they’d butt heads with a similarly advanced yet more mystical nation such as Atlantis. And with Namor’s history of working against Wakanda in Marvel Comics, it would be entirely logical for their dynamic in the MCU to follow suit. Only time will tell if the King of Atlantis will appear in the Black Panther sequel, or when he’ll appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at all, but whenever he does, Namor will be bringing the wrath of Atlantis with him.
