An Avengers developer who was asked what Xbox and PC players who want to play as Spider-Man should do had a not-very-helpful answer.

The build to Marvel’s Avengers has been going on for over a year. That build has been pretty mixed. When first announced, Marvel fans criticized the design of the game’s characters. However, as the release date has grown nearer, and more details have been revealed, excitement for Marvel’s Avengers has increased. That was until the bombshell dropped by its developers earlier this month.

The news that Spider-Man will join the Avengers in 2021. On the surface, that sounds like good news. However, the web-slinger will only be a playable character on the PS4 and PS5 versions of Marvel’s Avengers. Since Spidey won’t be coming to Xbox and PC, that means he can’t truly be a part of the game’s ongoing story on any platform.

Crystal Dynamics’ head Scot Amos has defended the decision and explained how the inclusion of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Avengers came about. “Because of Sony’s unique relationship with Marvel and PlayStation, specifically, that gives us an affordance with Spider-Man that we wouldn’t have otherwise,” Amos explained. That won’t come as much comfort to gamers who plan on playing Avengers on Xbox or PC.

When asked what gamers using non-Sony platforms can do if they want to play as Spider-Man, Amos didn’t exactly offer up the most sympathetic answer. “For those players who absolutely want to play as Spider-Man, you have the option to do so on PlayStation,” Amos said. So basically, anyone who wants Spidey to join up with Thor and Iron Man in 2021 will need to buy a PS4, or a PS5 when the console is released.

PlayStation’s relationship with Square Enix, and Sony’s ownership of Spider-Man, makes Avengers on PS4 and PS5 a far better option than other platforms. However, as highlighted above, it’s also bad news for PlayStation owners. Unless added to all platforms, Spider-Man can never fully be a part of the game and will be nothing more than a novelty for those who can use him.
