As the culmination of a decade of worldbuilding across dozens of movies and television shows, Avengers: Endgame had the tall task of wrapping up dozens of storylines and character arcs. Even with 3 hours of screen time, the film only had so much room to feature all the heroes, gods, villains, and talking raccoons who were introduced in the previous 21 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

While some characters graced the screen longer than others, some beloved fan favorites appeared only briefly. Each character’s screen time corresponds to their journey in the MCU’s first three phases, from a bereaved Queen welcoming her resurrected son back to a spoiled playboy who finally finds his heroic heart.

10 Most – Hawkeye/Clint Barton (18:00)

Clint made up for lost time in Endgame as he was completely absent in Avengers: Infinity War. Just barely beating Black Widow in screen time, Clint’s character had to not only be re-established but also revamped from his earlier incarnation as the expert archer Hawkeye.

Now called Ronin, the Clint Barton in Endgame is a changed man. Having lost his entire family in the Snap, Clint now is a cold-blooded killer who delivers his own brand of justice that leaves no one alive. His salvation arrives in the form of his old friend Natasha Romanoff, who promises him his family’s resurrection through an elaborate time heist that will reverse the effects of the Blip. All told, Hawkeye appears for 18 minutes of Avengers: Endgame.

9 Most – Hulk/Bruce Banner (20:00)

In Avengers: Infinity War, Hulk was quickly subdued by Thanos in the opening fight that left Loki dead and Thor defenseless. Now unable to simply transform into the Hulk by getting angry, Bruce Banner is largely on the sidelines with only a Hulkbuster armor suit to aid his teammates when Wakanda is invaded by the Black Order.

Avengers: Endgame showcases Hulk’s evolution from a green savage concerned only with smashing anything in his path to an intelligent colossus who has overcome his fear of Thanos. Hulk is also key to instigating the time heist that allows the Avengers to gather all the Infinity Stones to bring everyone back, appearing for a full 20 minutes of the film.

8 Most – Thor (21:15)

In contrast to the new and improved Hulk, the Thor featured in Avengers: Endgame has de-evolved into an out-of-shape alcoholic who still feels guilt for not taking out Thanos when he had the chance at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

It is only through the time heist, when he has the chance to talk to his deceased mother Frigga, that Thor shakes off his existential stupor and becomes the hero he needs to be to fight Thanos one last time. After 21 minutes and 15 seconds of screen time, Thor has moved past being a ruler of Asgard, handing the mantle of King to his fellow warrior Valkyrie before joining the Guardians of the Galaxy for their next adventure.

7 Most – Captain America/Steve Rogers (30:45)

The soul of the MCU has one of the most prominent character journeys in Avengers: Endgame. First seen counseling bereaved survivors of the Snap, Steve Rogers is enlisted by his fellow Avengers in the Time Heist to retrieve the Infinity Stones. After traveling to 2012 and duking it out with an alternate version of himself, Steve realizes he must travel further back in time to retrieve the Space Stone.

After arriving at a S.H.I.E.L.D. military base in 1970, he encounters the one person he has ever romantically loved: Peggy Carter. After defeating Thanos and scattering the Infinity Stones to their rightful times and places, the last image of Avengers: Endgame is of a young Steve finally fulfilling his promise to dance with his one true love. The moment also comes after a good chunk of screen time for the beloved Avenger: Steve appears for 30 minutes and and 45 seconds of the movie.

6 Most – Iron Man/Tony Stark (34:45)

It is only natural that the hero that started it all gets the most screen time in the last film of Phase Three. Tony Stark barely edges out Steve Rogers in this regard, but as the heart of the MCU, Tony’s character arc is arguably the most important in wrapping up major plot points that were started in the original Iron Man.

Long retired after the events in Avengers: Infinity War, Tony has finally found domestic bliss in Avengers: Endgame by marrying Pepper Potts and raising their child, Morgan Stark. However, it is Tony, and no one else, who delivers the killing blow to Thanos, snapping him out of existence for good. Tony’s sacrifice, and his subsequent death, not only is a fitting end to the character but a bittersweet coda to Phase 3 of the MCU. All told, the original Avenger is in an impressive 34 minutes and 45 seconds of Endgame.

5 Least – Queen Ramonda (00:15)

The last time Queen Ramonda appeared in the MCU was in Black Panther, when she helped her son T’Challa assume the throne of Wakanda and defeat his cousin Erik Killmonger. She was absent in Avengers: Infinity War during the siege of Wakanda, letting her children and the Dora Milaje defend the country against the Children of Thanos.

In Avengers: Endgame, Ramonda is still in Wakanda, presiding regally over the kingdom she has lived in her entire life. She is joined by a revived T’Challa and Shuri, noddingly approvingly as Wakanda celebrates the reversal of the Snap and the return of their country’s King. Though Ramonda’s appearance is a nice touch, it’s also very short at 15 seconds.

4 Least – M’Baku (00:15)

Like his Queen, M’Baku appears only briefly in Avengers: Endgame. Unlike Ramonda, M’Baku is on the battlefield, joining the fight against Thanos by battling alongside Captain America and Thor. While his dialogue is mostly limited to battle cries, he makes his presence known as he defeats hordes of menacing Chitauri.

M’Baku was originally going to have a bigger role in Avengers: Endgame. According to the actor who plays the character, Winston Duke, M’Baku had more fight scenes in the Battle for Earth sequence that were ultimately cut for time and narrative clarity, meaning his screen time totals just 15 seconds.

3 Least – Ned Leeds (00:15)

Where Spider-Man goes, Ned Leeds follows. Peter Parker’s loyal best friend has appeared with him in nearly every MCU movie since Spider-Man: Homecoming. Like his friend, Ned crumbled to dust when Thanos wielded the Infinity Gauntlet and snapped half of the universe out of existence.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, audiences see the two friends together for the first time after 5 years apart. Still high school juniors at Midtown School of Science and Technology, they find each other in the school’s crowded hallways and have a heartfelt reunion lasting around 15 seconds.

2 Least – Dr. Jane Foster (oo:15)

Dr. Jane Foster is a character more talked about than seen in the MCU. Last seen in Thor: The Dark World saving London from Frost Beasts, Jane is mentioned in Avengers: Age of Ultron and Thor: Ragnarok, but her character never actually appears onscreen.

While she makes a surprise appearance in Avengers: Endgame, it is not much better than her previous forays in the MCU. In archival footage from Thor: The Dark World, Jane is briefly seen asking an Asgardian maiden for a proper pair of pants. Natalie Portman did not film any new footage for this scene; the only thing new about it is her dialogue. Nonetheless, Jane’s appearance, clocking in at 15 seconds, is a welcome callback to the previous Thor movies and one of the MCU’s central romances.

1 Least – Almost Everyone At Tony Stark’s Funeral (00:15)

The epilogue to Avengers: Endgame serves as a touching memorial to Tony Stark. As such, almost every major and minor character from the MCU makes an appearance. In addition to a grieving Scarlet Witch, there’s the reunited Guardians of the Galaxy, a stoic Dr. Strange, and a tearful Pepper Potts. All of these characters have been prominently featured previously in the movie, so it makes sense they appear in the denouement.

There are a handful of characters, however, who make their first and only appearance in Avengers: Endgame as silent mourners paying their last respects to Tony. A long tracking shot reveals once dead heroes like Nick Fury and Maria Hill now alive. Perhaps the most obscure and surprising character to appear in this sequence is Harley Keener, the little boy Tony Stark mentored in Iron Man 3. While these characters have the most minimal of screen time at 15 seconds, their appearances only emphasize the impact Iron Man had on their lives and how meaningful his death is to the MCU.
