AVICII Invector Encore Edition Review OnTheGo AVICII

When AVICII Invector released at the beginning of the year, I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Granted, I was a fan of the legendary DJ’s music, but I had been out of the rhythm game genre since my college days spent playing Rock Band. With AVICII Invector, I (obviously) enjoyed listening to the game’s soundtrack, but was pleasantly surprised with how tight the gameplay and rhythm mechanics were, while being admittedly caught a bit off guard with the cathartic experience that the game provided. Although I still prefer the overall experience on the PlayStation 4, AVICII Invector Encore Edition is a wonderful addition to the Switch library, especially with its added Encore Edition tracklist.

Pushin’ The Beat

At its core, AVICII Invector is a rhythm game that sees players guiding a spacecraft through various worlds while hitting specified buttons to the beat of some of AVICII’s most famous songs, such as “The Nights” and “Wake Me Up.” What’s great about the Encore Edition (besides this beautifully designed custom Nintendo Switch) is that it comes with the Tim Song Pack and the Magma Song Pack. These tracks include:

Tim Song Pack

  • Bad Reputation
  • Freak
  • Heart upon my sleeve
  • Peace of mins
  • SOS

Magma Song Pack

  • Addicted to you
  • My Feelings For You
  • Seek Bromance
  • Sunshine
  • Trouble

These song packs are also available as standalone DLC purchases for the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One versions of the game, but having them already included in the Encore Edition is a great way to have all of the tracks in a single package.

“Tough Love”

Obviously, the benefit of picking up AVICII Invector Encore Edition on the Switch is being able to play the game while on-the-go. This particular rhythm game lends itself very well to being played in that regard thanks to its button-based timing, rather than requiring an extra accessory.

That said, unless you know the location of each lettered-button on the Joy-Con, you might struggle a bit with hitting the correct button. The button mapping and controller association was easier for me on the PlayStation 4 thanks to my familiarity with the DualShock 4 controller, as well as the fact that the colored on-screen button prompts were the same colors as the buttons themselves. Given the Joy-Con’s all-black buttons, it was a bit tricky to train my brain into knowing which button was which. Of course, this may be a non-issue for you if the Switch is your primary gaming platform.

AVICII Invector on PlayStation 4 also benefits from having a more weighted feel to it. Controlling the ship – both in freestyle sections and barrel rolling on each track – just feels better on the PS4. Controlling the ship on the Switch is fine, but it feels a bit loose in comparison. Granted, this is a pretty nitpicky complaint, given that piloting the spacecraft is by no means a major component to the game’s actual gameplay.

The only actual gripe I have with AVICII Invector Encore Edition is with its multiplayer mode not having any sort of online component. You can play with up to four players locally (which is fun), but online leaderboards are unavailable. On one hand, this makes sense when you consider the limits of the Switch’s network connectivity, but it’s still kind of a bummer that there’s no sort of online component. AVICII’s music is something that should be celebrated and shared with others – even if it comes in the form of some friendly competition.

“True Believer”

Ultimately, the move to Switch makes sense for AVICII Invector Encore Edition, and it is a successful one at that – guided by Tim “AVICII” Bergling’s love for the genre. If you have the option, I’d recommend the console version of the game as a first choice, but if you’re someone who is constantly on-the-go (as much as one can be “on-the-go” right now), then AVICII Invector Encore Edition will be well-worth adding to your Switch library.

A Switch copy of AVICII Invector Encore Edition was provided to TheGamer for this review. AVICII Invector is available now for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
