One of Twitch’s top RuneScape streamers, B0aty, revealed to his chat that he’d turned down a $20,000 sponsorship offer for ethical reasons. Content creators heavily rely on sponsorship deals in order to make a living, but not all of them are worth saying yes to.
B0aty revealed an interesting bit of information within the opening half-hour of a normal RuneScape stream. When asked by chat about his opinion of another creator, he explained how they were the type to take any type of sponsor – even those harmful to his audience. To explain his point, B0aty outlined an experience he had just the night before.
“A sponsor DM’d me last night and their offer was: 45 minutes a week (for two weeks)… $20,000. You may POG, you may POG.” He led his viewers on with a lot of drawn-out pauses, purposely withholding the details of the sponsor. Eventually, he revealed that during the 1.5 hours of stream time, he would have to “play blackjack and roulette, which means that it is a decline.” He said his rule of streaming was that he’d never partner with a “house odds” sponsor, which doesn’t include poker sponsors. “You lose all of your money playing poker – you’re a shit poker player. You lose all of your money playing blackjack – you’re supposed to. Think about that.”
It’s one thing to hop onto a bandwagon sponsor (like Raid: Shadow Legends) and pretend like you actually enjoy the product. It’s another thing entirely to promote rigged gambling to an audience, especially an audience containing a large percentage of minors. Luckily, the world has souls like B0aty who actually have a moral compass, passing up on absolutely dumb amounts of cash.
Perhaps the most infamous case was during a fairly big YouTube scandal, which highlighted how creators such as Jake Paul and RiceGum were accepting large offers to promote rigged gambling equivalents to minors. There is, however, one instance of irresponsible gambling that B0aty has been known to partake in on stream – Google’s “random” number generator.
“What are the odds?” is a notoriously dangerous game to play, and when B0aty undertook a 1-in-365 chance at immediately ending stream – he lost. A man of his word, the streamer ended the broadcast right away, accepting his defeat.
