While pitting fandoms against one another is so last century (we’re looking at you, Star Wars and Star Trek fans), it’s still tempting to decide who’s cuter between The Mandalorian’s the Child, also known as Baby Yoda (or, as the fandom has affectionately named him, “Kevin”), or our beloved Baby Groot of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy fame. Difficult, the decision is.

Both of these characters give us miniaturized versions of beloved, ancient beings who speak in strange ways. Both make us go “Awww!” in a way that only “I Can Has Cheezburger” has been able to do before. But which one is cuter? You be the judge.

10 Baby Yoda: More Refined

Baby Yoda isn’t the baby of reality, the one that spits all over you, repeats curse words in church and throws a temper tantrum at Walmart. He’s so much more refined, calmly gazing at you with those wisdom-filled eyes and making you yearn for parenthood, even if you know he’s not what the stork will bring.

While there’s something fun about a rambunctious child, Baby Yoda is the baby soothed by a warm drink, cooing in the crib or buggy that makes everyone say, “Awww,” and not, “Get that thing away from me.” Like all kids, he’s going to have his moments, but for the most part Baby Yoda is a dream baby.

9 Baby Groot: More Mischievous

While as calm babies are so much easier to keep clean and care for, mischievous babies can be so much more fun, especially when they’re Baby Groot. Baby Groot will enthusiastically greet you like any other baby, but then he’ll steal away your hammer or try to blow everyone up with the wrong button because he’s an adorable little tyke. You worry more about Baby Yoda in battle than you do Baby Groot (until you don’t).

Sure, Baby Yoda will press buttons you don’t want him to push and use the Force at inopportune moments, but he generally saves his energy since he needs a nap afterward anyway.

8 Baby Yoda: More Meme-Worthy

Compare the memes, merch and other hullabaloo between both characters. and Baby Yoda obviously has much more. Baby Groot has his share of memes, Bop-It games and action figures, but Baby Yoda was instantly such a success that stores found themselves scrambling to carry his merchandise, kicking themselves for not having it for the holidays.

Baby Yoda may be the most popular meme of all fandom, and he’s been used in everything from taking us back to our childhoods to demonstrating what it’s like to love tea or to shyly emerge from your social ineptitude when you sense someone like you nearby.

7 Baby Groot: Rowdier

Baby Groot’s not only full of mischief, but like lots of toddlers, he’s also as rowdy as they come. He’s got enough energy to keep up with all of the Guardians and to chase mini-monsters while they face the big baddies.

Maybe it’s because Baby Yoda is already (or only, depending on how you look at it) 50, or maybe he’s just an old soul, but he doesn’t do half of the leaping around, screaming and fighting that Baby Groot does. Baby Groot makes it clear from the moment he can walk that he’s a rabble-rouser who’s ready to team up with Rocket Raccoon and the gang.

6 Baby Yoda: Cute Sleeping

Baby Groot looks cute while he’s all tuckered out and ready for bedtime, but Baby Yoda wins the actual sleep department. While he’s nodding off and dreaming of frogs ⁠— or whatever it is he dreams about ⁠— his lips make adorable little baby movements that make us want to snuggle him and never let go. His ears also continue to move in his sleep, which is another thing that makes him so darn cute.

Whether he’s tucked in for a wild flight or entertaining a group of children, Baby Yoda’s ears are always helping his expressive face in the melting our hearts department.

5 Baby Groot: Dances

Baby Yoda might like music (and plenty of fans have given him a soundtrack where he tries to change the station), but it’s Baby Groot who has the sweet moves. The first time we saw Baby Groot dance in his pot, our heads nearly exploded from the cuteness, and Dancing Groot became just as popular of a topic as Baby Groot.

Dancing Groot also gave us some spoilers about what Baby Groot would be like in the next film as he became even more mischievous and ready to give Rocket a run for his money. But like any baby, even he couldn’t prepare us for Teen Groot…

4 Baby Yoda: A Cuddly Lil Bean

As adorable as Baby Groot is, he’s not exactly the cuddly type. This isn’t just because he’s so mischievous he might bite or poke you, but also simply because he’s literally made of bark, which isn’t so much fun to hold.

Baby Yoda is so warm and fuzzy-looking in his little robe. He’s practically begging for you to snuggle him and read him a bedtime story. He’s the kind of baby that inspires little kids to want to dress him up and parade him around in a baby carriage ⁠— which is probably not a great idea. While you might put Baby Groot in a co-sleeping bed attachment to avoid splinters, Baby Yoda would share your pillow as you fall asleep.

3 Baby Groot: Says Words

Baby Yoda’s heartwarming noises are super cute, but who doesn’t love a baby’s first words? Baby Groot technically only says three more words than Baby Yoda does, but it was so cute to hear him say them the first time that we all wanted to rewind the movie to hear them again. His little baby tree voice is one of the cutest things about the sapling.

He may not speak in the cryptic way that Baby Yoda is sure to do someday, but he certainly uses his three words to convey plenty of thoughts, from the sweet to the snarky.

2 Baby Yoda: More Meaningful

Most of the time, Baby Groot runs amok and amuses us with his shenanigans, but he’s not generally as meaningful as a character as Baby Yoda seems to be, aside from his origin. Baby Yoda is a calming presence who can stop a fight and inspire people.

When you look into Baby Groot’s face, you might give a squee over his cuteness, but after the initial oohing and ahing over Baby Yoda, you also feel a sense of calmness and tranquility. That’s because Baby Yoda has a depth that Baby Groot just doesn’t have. The New York Times has even declared that “Baby Yoda is your god now,” so who are we to question that?

1 Baby Groot: Restores Our Spirits

Baby Yoda was a neat surprise, but Baby Groot restored our spirits after Groot sacrificed himself in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. After the devastation, we all felt at the loss of one of the funniest and coolest characters of the MCU, especially after only just meeting him. With the fact that most of the MCU heroes live another day on our minds, Baby Groot was the healing balm we needed to finish the film in peace.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which is possibly one of the funniest films ever made, is also partly so good because of Baby Groot and his antics, along with the rest of his family.
