Katie Thurston’s “12 Days of Messy,” which saw her pair men from her season of The Bachelorette with songs from Taylor Swift’s Red (Taylor’s Version), recently ended with a bang — she seemingly confirmed that she’s dating John Hersey, a guy who was eliminated in week 2 of her season. Ever since Katie and fiancé Blake Moynes broke off their engagement, rumors have been swirling that she and John are more than friends. After cryptically responding to these speculations earlier this month, Katie is finally letting Bachelor Nation in on her love life.
On Oct. 25, Katie and Blake released a joint statement about their breakup, which they said was mutual. The distance between California and Blake’s home country of Canada made it difficult, and they decided to go their separate ways while still supporting each other. However, fans noticed another man consistently appearing on Katie’s social media — John, the 27-year-old bartender from California who she sent packing in the second week. She shared an Instagram Story about the “wild DMs” received concerning her and John with the song “Best Friend” by Harry Nilsson, but Katie didn’t explicitly confirm or deny a new romance.
Throughout Katie’s “12 Days of Messy,” her followers anxiously waited to see if she would use the opportunity to reveal that she and John are, in fact, more than friends. On Nov. 23, the final day, Katie did just that. On her Instagram Story, as Taylor Swift’s “Begin Again” plays, sweet videos of John are featured in sync with the lyrics, “I’ve been spending the last eight months, thinking all love ever does is break, and burn and end. But on a Wednesday in a café, I watched it begin again.” Clips of John include him making Katie a cocktail (complete with a rose) at the bar he works at; smiling while piloting a small plane; and walking up to meet Katie for the first time on the season premiere of The Bachelorette. When John turns away and walks into the resort, Katie smiles and says, “That’s my type.”
Regarding Katie’s (not so) new man, Bachelor Nation is split. Many are rooting for them, including mutual friend and Bachelor In Paradise star Chris Conran, who said, “Happy for them, two great people.” Others feel her post is disrespectful toward Blake, who she used to kick off the “12 Day of Messy” with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.” On Instagram, fan page BacheloretteWindmill concluded that the plane video was taken with Blake sitting next to her. At some point since the start of “12 Days of Messy,” Blake unfollowed Katie on Instagram. Currently, she still follows him.
Whether or not someone feels Katie moved on from Blake too quickly, they can’t deny that her chemistry with John is strong. In nearly every video and photo they post of each other, they’re smiling ear to ear. In the midst of one franchise breakup after the next, the most recent being Tayshia Adams and now ex-fiancé Zac Clark, seeing somebody find their person can’t be a bad thing. The timing can seem questionable to some fans, who are tossing around the word “cheated.” But then again, it’s possible that John was Katie’s person all along. She just needed to form that post-Bachelorette friendship to realize it.
