Back 4 Blood’s launch is almost upon us, and reviews for the new co-op zombie shooter from genre masters are slowly rolling in. So far, things look promising for those of you who waited patiently for the Left 4 Dead successor to arrive finally.

Many expected Back 4 Blood to bring back the excitement and tension of the L4D series with modern enhancements, and it seems Turtle Rock Studios may have nailed the formula. As seen in the impressions trickling in, the title delivers on its core shooter mechanics, while the card-driven gameplay brings necessary evolution to the established co-op formula. And since Back 4 Blood is a live-service experience, those of you who enjoy it can expect an experience that becomes a major part of your social life.

As for us here at TheGamer, we gave it four and a half stars out of five, with our reviews editor Sam Watanuki saying: “Back 4 Blood is a more mature and more bad-ass version of L4D, elevating every mechanic from the former series and making it better while adding in new features that makes playing far more rewarding.”

You can check out scores from other critics already, too.

Right now, Back 4 Blood is hovering around 75 on Metacritic and 79 on OpenCritic, which is pretty solid. However, there aren’t too many scores up just yet, so you may see that number swing in other directions as impressions continue to go live over the next few days.

Turtle Rock’s spiritual revival of L4D isn’t without a few problems. Several outlets notedbalance issues, repetitive mission structure, poor console controls, and poorly connected cross-platform multiplayer. Presumably, as time goes on, Turtle Rock can address these issues and elevate Back 4 Blood one step closer to perfection.

Early players have also complained about the game’s solo progression systems, and the studio has already responded. So if you plan to give Back 4 Blood a try as a one-person squad, it may be better to wait for improvements in upcoming patches.

Back 4 Blood launches on October 12. You can get instant access to the full game via a Game Pass subscription starting on day one.
