Joker War is currently underway in Batman #98, and Bruce Wayne is at his lowest ebb. Joker is winning, but Batman and Harley Quinn have not called it quits. After Harley gave Batman some special Poison Ivy tea in Batman #97 to help him overcome Joker’s new toxin, the Dark Knight is forced to confront his underlying problems, and a vision of Alfred Pennyworth tells him that if he’s going to save Gotham City, he first needs to save himself – all while Harley protects the Dark Knight from Punchline.

The Joker has taken over the Wayne fortune, kidnapped Lucius Fox, drugged and injured Batman, and is mind-controlling Dick Grayson, declaring that in this war, there are no limits. Sadly, all this comes on the tail of Alfred Pennyworth’s recent death in the “City of Bane” storyline, robbing Bruce of his most steadfast ally and the one man who always knew what to say.

One of the big questions of the Batman series has been, “Can Bruce Wayne have a happy ever after?” Can the Batman be happy without losing what makes him the Batman? “Joker War” has teased a future Gotham utopia, but in order to get there, Bruce Wayne has to become the person who can bring it about. In Alfred and Bruce’s imaginary heart to heart, his stand-in father points out that in “allowing” Alfred to die, he has been exposed to the impossibility of his true aims as Batman. Bruce has been blaming others for the loss of Alfred, grappling with the fact that he cannot save everyone. Bruce could not save his parents or Alfred, and he’ll only get the chance to save anyone if he’s able to grow past his terrible hurt.

The only way for Batman to defeat the Joker this time is to save himself, giving him enough hope to call on the entire Bat Family and set about saving the city he loves. The best part about this conversation is that it is Bruce’s subconscious telling him what to do: Bruce knows that this is what Alfred would tell him, and it’s exactly what he needs to hear to get back on his feet. Batman #98 gives Batman the pep talk he needs to start fixing his family and Gotham in the upcoming Batman #99. This chapter also starts laying the framework for the road to the Gotham utopia of the future. Happily, Batman is back on his feet and ready to fight.

Batman #99 will be available from September 15.
